Yet more trouble with the Bimmer. Driving in town today and the auto box started flaring and shunting. Best case scenario it needs a new filter and fluid but it was fully serviced last February and it should have been changed. Worst case scenario is the gearbox is goosed. Seems strange as it's fairly low mileage (120k) but then my dad's been driving it - he is to cars what Bernard Matthews is to turkeys. So... can anyone fill me in on what gearbox it is, and whether it can be found in any other BMW's? It's a 1994 BMW 525 TD Auto.

Seems he's had enough of this car, which means I've inherited it. Erm... yay?
Googled for info but I cant find anything relating to what gearbox this car has. If anyone can help with info that'd be cool. I might not need one yet - I'm hoping a fluid n filter change will sort it.
Of course I've now got plans to wind the boost up and increase the fuelling... ;D

Think BM's use ZF autoboxes, which autoboxes I've heard are an atrocity against civilization. B&D for the real info. Here's a BM box going boom:

Also, if it comes down to it, I will give you a hand down Looms for all the manual bits... Hope that isn't required though! Rysz.

probably has a ZF 5hp18 or in very rare instances have a 4speed GM box like the 325td's. probably the zf, change the oil and filter but that might not be cheap. check to see if it has a green bung on the level plug on the sump. if it has its theoretically sealed for life and the oil will set you back a fair bit. might get away with a top up but you can never tell. BMW will sell the fluid for about £16-20 per litre! it may be dextron 2/3 but I'd check first! most 5hp18's used esso of wallet cripling viscosity seem to remember this is the stuff- www.oil-store.co.uk/?path=item&id=378can't check at work because we're off until the 6th now ask on forum.bmw.5?

Thanks guys! Edd... thanks again mate, I think we should get some kind of BMW hotline installed! ;D I'll have a look at it tomorrow when it's light. I was supposed to be doing that injector but it might not be such an urgent job now! I wonder if I can swap to a manual...

gearboxes are made by ZF
E34 525 td Automatic tranny as below
A4S 270R, or A4S 310R dependant on model and year I believe
although all mine where 4hp22 or similar?
there wil be a part number on the section of the gearbox half way up near the back (just above the sump bolts)
omegas used the same engine for a while so might be a cheaper alternative?
I'm sure someone will be along soon to check the above
I got this info from bimmerwerks.com
hope it helps

I'll have a peek and sniff at the box (!) tomorrow. It's not looking good is it? Still, it means I get a decent car for very little, even if I have to swap out the trans, if I can find another cheaply enough.

Just thought I'd update this incase anyone else needs the info. Having looked into it more, it seems my gearbox is the GM 4L30E sealed-for-life unit. I suppose that makes sense as the M51 TD engine was fitted to Omegas too, so the GM connection is there. The TDS model had the 5-speed ZF box as far as I can find out. I haven't been able to confirm this 100% as I can't see the gearbox from under the car without removing the belly plate, and with it being Xmas eve I really can't be arzed! If it is this box, it takes Dexron III ATF so not wallet-bustingly expensive, and a non-BMW filter should be findable for cheapness. I've read that the 4L30E can start to give trouble after 100k but sometimes can be revived with a fluid and filter change, so here's hoping!

CONVERT TO MANUAL! Those autoboxes are total utter curse word! Not worth replacing! A BMW dealership mechanic said they are not made for reversing, and using reverse will cause them to break. Now thats about the stupidest gearbox i`ve heard of

Welllll, it crossed my mind to put a manual in there but that's just a whole load of work, and time that could be spent on the Benz. It would be better... I'll see what happens.
I've never heard of BMW 'boxes being bad before, until I started reading up on them.
