I'm popping a Cooper engine into an Allegro (Yeah I know its probobly a waste!) anyway, Its got no carbs or manifold but I have been got an SU HS4 on the combined carb/exhaust manifold from the original 1275 engine. Also been given a HIF44 with the same sort of combined manifold. Is this HIF44 of an MG metro? What difference would a heated manifold and maniflow exhaust manifold/downpipe make? IF I were to compare both carbs on the engine which would produce better performance and why? Thanks.

Hi there Sounds like an interesting combination, would a metro turbo engine fit?? a whistling popping allegro Well the HS4 is a 1.5" and the hif44 is a 1.75" i think, the heated manifold is only really there to help with low speed running. But the exhaust will make a difference for sure. Will a mini manifold one fit thye allegro chassis? cheers J

Just a little side note... HS carbs have external float chambers, whereas HIFs have internal (IF stands for Internal Float) Hope I ain't stating the bleedin' obvious there!

I assume you are fitting a 1275cc cooper engine? if its on a standard cam then stick with a 1.5" carb as you will gat alot more midrange power (good for the road) HIF44s are great carbs but are best suited to bigger bore engines like 1380s or racing 1275s/1098s etc. Best to get the exhaust And yes a metro turbo lump will fit

HIF44 is standard kit for any 1275 A+ engine AFAIK.

Yeah, as far as i can tell its a standard 1275cc cooper engine as bought from a bloke out the paper. The Allegro already has a 1275cc lump, but I thought the cooper one could be more entertaining especially as the car has a top speed of 77mph... D'oh.
So you say I should setup the HS4 for this engine rather than the HIF44? What about carb needles?
I know the theory about the LCB system, that the centre branch should be twice as long as the side branches, but does it make a noticable difference? The cooper manifold is just three slightly longer branches over standard joining at the same point to a central downpipe.
I'm hoping that mini downpipes will fit the allegro shell, their seems to be plenty of room of adjustment if necesary and I think the servo is well out the way, Its just trial and error. Not many companies stock performance parts for a 78' Allegro! ;D

So you say I should setup the HS4 for this engine rather than the HIF44? What about carb needles? Yeh thats what id say, The HIF will give you a higher peak power to brag about ot your mates max power stylee but the HS4 is a better carb for road use ads you get better mid range. Athough the HIF does have other advantages such as less fuel surge problems so its not a bad choice. Also the HIF isnt standard fitment on a cooper (I'm assuming you men 60s cooper not a modern injection one?)
