Vehicle tax increases for 2009 and beyond....?

Aren't all the changes 'on hold' as a result of the economy being parped and another retrospective tax would be a surefire election-loser?

The original plans are on hold - well, reduced. All for post-2001 stuff only, so not really retro things. That'll just be as before.

...and yet the Government is thinking about bailing out Land Rover/Jaguar, who produce vehicles in the higher emissions range.

If they really wanted to dissuade people from buying higher emission cars, surely the best way would be to aloow manufacturers of such cars to disappear! Oh, wait, its not about the Environment at all, is it!

Why should the taxpayer even bail them out, seeing as parent company Tata is sponsoring Ferrari in the 2009 F1GP?

This week, multi-billion £ bailout to save jobs.

Next week, they close the factory anyway and flounce off with the money.

So if these rules they are suggesting are for cars reg'd after 2001,I wonder what they have in store later on for the pre 2001 stuff ? And why did they choose 2001 as the base line?

Eventually ,we'll all be on a slippery slope ,I reckon!

All our vans are £185 and Private Light Goods, all pre 2001 (pre 1988 actually), unless they are pre 1973, and therefore the tax is FREE! There is no way of taxing Mk1 and Mk2 transits by the C02 they emit, as it isn't registered from new at the DVLA.
