Ayup
got a horrible noise thats started on the 106 - at idle it makes an awful metallic hammering sound, as if something is loose
put your foot on the accelerator a tiny bit and oput a little bit of load on and it goes away - doesnt do it whilst moving either. Moving through the box at standstill wont change it either. Still drives the same as its ever done.
thinking it may be the gearbox - idler? bearings?
any ideas?
THANKS!
Tim

apparently, when I looked into an odd gearbox noise for a mate with a 106, there is a known fault with these where some bolt inside the gearbox works loose over time and causes vibration internally. To fix involves some faff takign the box out/apart. He never bothered getting his looked at and still runs (and makes the noise) nearly 2 years later. Could well be same fault with yours

Do you find it goes away if you put the clutch in as well?

nah - the noise you are talking about is different - and it has that as well whioch is clutch operated - this new noise is a lot louder and the only thing that makes it go away is putting a bit of load on the engine.
i guess that means its the engine end of the clutch mechanism?
got a spare box at home, but no space/skills to fit the curse word

Probably something a bit loose. If it's a diseasel, there's a fair amount of vibration at idle and the frequency of that vibration will change as the revs rise. Try to focus on where it's coming from.

Could be something daft like the exhaust heat shroud? i was thinking that - and it has started since i had the spare dropped which involves pulling the cage out (which was left slightly loose by the tyre bloke and rattled like mad all the way home) wonder if he's twatted the exhaust and done something to the shield? have to get it jacked up and have a look, although i have NO free daylight time between now and christmas to do it

The 106 Diesel I had went through a few exhaust rubbers. The exhaust always rattled but made a racket when the rubbers gave up.

go to halfords and by a mechanics stethoscope , (plug the curse word into your ears!!!) and aim the rod at random things till you find the source.

The 106 Diesel I had went through a few exhaust rubbers. The exhaust always rattled but made a racket when the rubbers gave up. GIVE THE MAN A POINT HE'S GOT IT IN ONE! hanging out of the car with my foot on the throttle and head pretty much on the car park and I can see the exhaust rattling on the middle support when its at idle. Annoying that its RIGHT in the middle of the car so will be an to get at without ramps but at least it should be an easy fix. Is that easy to do on your own, or does it involve taking the exhaust system apart? I'm asuming you support the exhaust, unbolt the support, replace the rubber and bolt it back on or is it more compelx than that (its a peugeot after all, they don't do sensible.)

The middle rubber isn't that bad to do without ramps, just jack one side up really high. You should be able to slip it on without dismantling anything, use plenty of washing up liquid.
The rubber might still be on there, in which case you'll need to tweak the mounts on the back box to move the exhaust to stop the bracket fouling the tunnel.
