Right, I'm a bit stuck. Does the turbo go this way round: or this way round (sorry for curse word positioning - there was a bracket in the way which I think needs removing): or slightly better pic off engine: Or perhaps the turbo can be dismantled and swapped round a bit to make the intake etc face a different way? I'm new to turbo's....

Dunno the answer, but good luck with it! What engine is it and what car is it going in?

Hmm, looks like it's the second and third pics. I'm guessing that the big shiny silver part on the right side (technical eh!) can be rotated so that the sticky out bit faces upwards rather than backwards straight at the bulk head! Its an 8 valve G60 engine with a turbo technics manifold and a T3 turbo and it's going into the silver MK1 Jetta track car. I took the following photo at International this year - was an 8V Turbo kit. Obviously upside down though...

And thinking about it now, with it that way round the outlet for the turbo/exhaust would be in the correct place, near to the centre of the car on the gearbox side. I'll have to have a look at the turbo and see how it comes apart.

You can turn the comp housing and centre housing to wherever you want relative to the turbine, as long as the actuator bracket (which is held by the comp housing bolts) stays in the right place. Obv make sure the oil drain is pointing straight downwards.
No need to dismantle it, just loosen the bolts and turn the bits to the orientation you want.

No supercharger, just the turbo.
I'm starting to understand now - the third pic shows oil drain pointing wrong way doesn't it. Once i've sussed out which is in and out, i'll turn it all round a bit. Cheers.

In, is the one which is fully machined/drilled, and out is the one where you see a large cavity with a cast surface when you look inside.

Out of the following two, which would you think was inlet and outlet for oil. Pic 1: Or pic 2: One's bigger then the other, and more rectangular. On the air inlet side of things, i'm guessing that air goes via a filer into the large hole in the side where you can see the turbine in the middle, and gets forced out of the spiral part, into the intercooler and then into the engine.

The round one’s the inlet, the square one’s the outlet.
As for the compressor connections, correct – the air goes in the centre and comes out the ‘spout’.

can you do me a favour and post up a top view of the compressor end? (ie looking at the impeller through the inlet)

No probs. Heres two of both sides: Does it look standard to you? Was told it's been modified, but dunno how.

‘mods’ to those normally entail a stiffer actuator spring and/or maybe a 360° thrust bearing from a truck application, but I wouldn’t pay much attention to whether or not its been modded! If whoever did it, did it without knowing what engine it was going to go on the mods would be just stabs in the dark anyway. Can we see a pic of the nameplate label? See who built it.

Nice. Don't reckon that the thrust bearing has been done, as looking at the nut on the ead of the comp wheel, it has a balancing mark that is still there from the factory. So probably the only thing that has been done is a bit of curse word with the actuator. BB

Oh, and I wanted it too see who had cast it, stable curiosity and all that.
Can't see the foundry mark, or if it is that BCC one, I don't know who it is...
Any ideas?
