Most people will know that some time after they stopped making Maestros here all the bits went to China where they were made for a few years by a company called Etsong Lubao. Etsong Lubao Maestros had Montego noses and came in hatchback and van form. They went out of production in the early 2000s. End of the road for the Maestro. Well, no. Enter the Chengdu YeMa Maestro van. Powered by a Chinese engine and with the Etsong front end but still a Maestro. Can anything kill this car? www.chinacartimes.com/2008/05/21/british-motoring-madness-the-maestro-van-lives-on/

Here is another image of the Yema SQJ6450. It seems that random letters and numbers are popular name system for cars in the Peoples Republic of China.

Just to be a bit different, I'd like to build a Maestego - A Montego with a Maestro front end. Or better yet, a Maestro van front end! That'd be an ugly beast... I wonder what sort of thing powers that thing? I know it's Chinese-built but I'd wager it's a copy of some sort of Western / Japanese power unit.

A bit of digging on www.aronline.co.uk reveals further mutations... ^ Estate based on the Montego / Maestro platform ^ An SUV. Yes, based on the same platform! You've gotta love the ingenuity of the Chinese. Full AR Online article here.

Someone MUST build a maestro van, with the arches off the blue/green estate thing, paint it BMC Almond green, slam it with small black wheels wide enough to fill the arches. And turbo power!

I don't think it's that bad looking, as an exercise in modernising the front end of a 30 year old car they've not done a bad job.
The restyled estate and the SUV are unreal though.
