I'm constructing a Patrol powered Range Rover. I planned this project because I love Nissan Patrols but hate the way they rust. Repair panels are not made for them unlike say, Range Rovers. I discovered that early Range Rovers were built like big Meccano sets with unboltable floor pan, bulkhead, inner wings, roof etc So I bought a running MOTd 1972 Range Rover. Within several hundred yards I realised these cars are a bit pants. No torque, slow, clonky slack drive train, heavy clutch, horrible gearchange, horrible switches, and I don't like constant four wheel drive. Fuel economy is appaling too. So I did it up a bit and sold it. Then bought a newer one (1993). Much more refined and improved handling and brakes but still a horrible wheezy engine with shocking thirst. (11mpg?) I need to build a best of both vehicle. So I bought a rusted out Patrol, very rusty Range Rover and another rolling Rangerover shell. And started playing Roobarb and Custard on them (a Scottish guy I know came up with that wonderful euphemism for using an angle grinder) Plan was to use the engine & transfer case in the Range Rover but I will be using more than that.

Patrols are way heavier than Range Rovers, but that's partly due to the Engine (cast iron block and head on the 4.2 diesel) and the gearbox is cast iron too. (Ooof) So my hybrid will be heavier than a standard rangie. Patrol axles are also stronger / heavier.

yes i have a thread up on there but i think a lot of the LR purists have secretly spat their pipes out because I'm putting so many Nissan bits on it (like the entire wiring harness and the instruments etc)

4 years ago I bought my mates b plate range of him to use as a daily and a tow vehicle, it had a patrol diesel in it and it pulled like a train all day long. I took it everywhere picking up retro's all over the country its got to be the best engine conversion.

It's a great idea as I love old rangies but the v8 is too thirsty and the diesel is too weasy. Is the patrol engine a straight 6? What sort of mpg do you get?

Another thumbs up here.
Much as I adore the V8's, even with gas on them they are too pricey to run (with my leaden foot anyhow), and are rather prone to self-harm. But the meccano structure as carried over from the series LR is a great bonus, they basically become 'triggers brush' as anything is bolt on & off able.
Following with interest.

3.3 and 2.8 Patrol diesels seem popular, but so far I don't think ANYONE has installed a 4.2 diesel (which is what I'm using, yes its a straight six too). It's a really tight fit and has required minor bulkhead cut, and big front crossmember cutout. I am also thinking of putting a turbo on it. I'm using the Patrol props, axles , brakes and steering column and servos too. Here's another photo or 2 main shell removed, engine going in front axles comparison axles in installing patrol servo assisted clutch cylinder, and Patrol brake cyl. floor mods

Hmm, I can think of more aerodynamic and lighter vehicles to make a dragster out of. Calipers rebuilt, top of patrol fuel tank going into range rover tank to get correct sender.

I had an '82 4-door Range-Rover with a 2.8 TD Nissan straight-six in it, bucketloads of torque, 30-35mpg and almost as great-sounding as the V8. With the overdrive in she'd sit at 85-90 all day up and downhill without breaking into a sweat. Epic motor. Shall keep an eye on this one.
