There was a thread on here recently about needing written evidence like reciepts and engineers reports when an engine swap has been done. I can't find the thread so i'll apologise in advance if i'm going over something thats already been covered. I've had a look on the dvla site and from what i can see this only applies if your changing the engine number and the cylinder capacity. If i'm changing the engine but the capacity is unchanged, do i still need to supply written evidence or do i just fill in the new engine number on the V5 and post as i would have done previously? Here's a cool looking van from last years classic car show at the NEC

I sent two off a couple of months back, just with engine number swaps and they came back fine.

Ive done loads of engine swops in recent years, maily c20xe conversions and have never had any bother. Think you only need the paperwork if your going down in cc,say a 2.0 to a 1.4 as the tax bracket will be lower.

If you've had yours back ok i should be alright then, fingers crossed. I've done a few swaps in tha past myself without any problems with the paperwork. I'm pretty sure these regulations are a recent addition though, hence the thread on it here recently.

Quote from the DVLA website: Change to engine and cylinder capacity (engine size) DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be: a receipt for the replacement engine written evidence from the manufacturer an inspection report provided for insurance purposes written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle End quote It does indeed say 'engine number AND cylinder capacity' . . . written evidence from the manufacturer I wonder if that means that they would be happy with a letter from the engine manufacturer confirming that engine No ABCDE123456789 left the factory with a cylinder capacity of xxxxCC ?

I will get round to finishing it at some point

I thought you only needed an inspection if the new engine would place the car in a lower tax bracket, if the car ends up in a higher tax bracket they just take your word for it.

probably easiest and fastest to just pay for an engineers report. You reckon? I would have thought "a receipt for the replacement engine" would be a lot less hassle, not to mention cheaper!

who does an engineers report then? I have a technicians diploma in motor vehicle engineering, so I should be able to write then myself if your replacing an engine- ie. ones beyond economic repair and you do a like for like replacement then the dvla can't do a thing I wouldn't have thought

Who said anything about a mate scribbling on a fag packet? A proper printed receipt will do just fine. When I did my last swap I just made a DIY receipt on our company paper.

I'm currently worried about this. My BMW E21 has just jumped from a 4cyl 1.8 to a 6cyl 2.5. I got the engine from a car I bought privately (no reciept) so I'm wondering if I will have to stump for an engineers report (anyone know how much this will likely to be?) or get a reciept made up somewhere...

Guys, just tell the DVLA what you want them to know. Fill out the V5 and if they ask, tell them more. End of. The DVLA are on the 'need to know' list as far as I am concerned.... If you offer them a whole file of papers, they may well just ask for more anyway, so give em what they ask for, when they ask for it. Just fill out the V5, and send it off. If you can't afford the reports or whatever, just leave the engine CC as it is, and make sure your insurance company is kept informed.
