I have done one of those silly things and bought a 1990 MK2 Golf GTi 8 Valve in white to complement the 1991 BMW 535i and the 1991 Saab 900 Convertible (sold and waiting collection).
I know nothing about them so any infor would be greatly appreciated. Piccies to follow.
Cheers
Alex

Club Gti is probably a good place to start, plenty of info on there and help if you need any. :-)

They're great cars if you buy a good one and great fun to drive. I bought a cheap one and spent what I paid for it trying to keep it working. When they go wrong, it can get expensive

I found they have alway's been pennies to keep running and great cars. Big wheels spoil the handling and on standard shocks and springs lift off oversteer is so much fun. ;D Can be chipped to bring up to 16v power with more torque quite cheaply as well and return 30 to gallon even over the ton.
Good choice.

Always find a well driven and maintained 8v will dick 16vs.I spent over 15k on my red one, coilovers, head work, balanced crank, easier breathing and regular servicing are the key!

I paid £250 and I has been owned by a guy who works at mclaren. It hunts a bit on idle sometimes and sounds a little rattly under hard acceleration, but the interior is very clean. f it is rubbish I will break it.

As said before. Standard suspension and standard wheels and standard tyres gives a fantastic handling car. Fantastic over bumps, fantastic over hump back bridges. Big wheels and lowering spoil the whole thing. When they wear out the bills can be big.

I love Mk2 Golfs. The only reason I sold my old one was because it had a 1.3 in there. Was really dangerious trying to get out of where I worked at the time as it was on a duel carrageway. Wish I didn't now IMO too, big wheels and dropping it too much can sometimes make it look gash, but there have been exceptions. Engines are usually bullet proof. Fantastic handling and GTI's go like stink Got an 8v Jetta and I've drove my mates 16v Golf and I prefered the Jetta, even though being a 1.6. Have some pictures My old one ^

I was very fond of my MK2. Handled great, kept up pretty well on the motorway for a 1.6, and felt solid and purposeful, like a little tank. As others have said though, it cost me a packet when things started to wear out, and once they started, it felt like a new thing went wrong or fell off every other week...

They're brilliant, I've got three right now. Supremely easy to work on and easily modified using bits from other VAG cars. A quick look in the readers' rides forum will show you a broad cross section of what you can do without too much hassle. They are brilliant fun to drive as standard, rebuilding the engine with a 2 litre bottom end from a Passat or Audi frees up a fair few more horses, too. Lowering will improve the handling as long as the wishbones don't start pointing upwards, an ARB on the rear will help lots, polybushing from front to back is an expensive mistake if you even suspect there may be the slightest imperfection on any road you're going to drive, Passat wishbones and driveshafts help no end in the corners but due to the inability to then get anything less than a degree and a half of negative camber can make it twitchy in a straight line. And the hunting idle thing? Whip off the ISCV, hook it up to 12V and bung it in an ice-cream tub full of petrol overnight.

Oh, and pulling out relay number 19 and replacing it with number 99 from a mk3 Golf will give you a programmable intermittent wiper. It's a little thing, but given it rains so much in this country it's quite a pleasant upgrade.

This is my red one just before I sold it.Lowering them too much definately spoils the handling, mine was absolutely on the deck on 9x16s,had no arch liners or anything.Looked awesome but handled gash!Quick in a straight line tho!

I've had 5 of em, definately my favourite car, as said by others here, great handling, good economy, cheap to keep running if you do the work yourself... If some dumbass farmer hadn't been dicking me around on an 84 GTI, I would have bought my 6th MK2 today...

I've had 3 Mk2's.
A 1985 1.0 (yes they did make one) which handled and gripped very neatly but was insanely slow, a 1988 Digi GTI which was a bit of a dog (looked nice but felt very flat to drive) and now we have a 1986 K-Jet that the Mrs bought from an ad on here for £350.
I'm not a big VW lover as a rule but they're solid, generally reliable, well catered for in the aftermarket and fun to drive. No reason not to get one really.
