Do Aston Martin not do this if you've got pockets deep enough? I think you can take in your db5, db6 and they'll add air con, sat nav, upgrade suspension, engine parts etc. I remember reading this in the Top Gear mag. The guy got his DB5 upgraded so it was easier to live with. God only knows how much he spent on it. www.topgear.com/content/features/stories/2006/09/stories/07/1.html

This is pretty much what we do to our cars - but for people that hire a painter instead of buying some Dulux! Although I think some cars (not many but some historical ones) should be kept absolutely pristine, I don't have a problem with upgrading them to the 21st century at all. God knows how much it would cost though... EDIT There was actually a Top Gear feature about the company you linked to, James May did a review of a KWE XJS and really rated it well. The company is (or was) called Knowles-Wilkin Engineering although they don't seem to have that on their website

Yeah Aston will upgrade, restore and update any of their cars for a price, i like those jags, if i had 50 grand and had to buy a car i'd be looking at buying a retro rather than a new car anyway, so why not buy one that has classic looks and modern road manners? thats what a lot of us do to our cars anyway.

its more the production line refurbishment idea I like.
I think all car makers should do this. Buy back their old end of life vehicles, refurb them and whack em out through the dealer chanel instead of making so many new ones (cue usual sob story about depleated resources, thing of our children, probably better for employmnet, etc)

Mercedes can be surprisingly helpful to owners of their older cars. Not THAT helpful mind

All well and good, but I would imagine that the sort of person who stumps up 50K for a car would want it to look like a 50K car, not somthing that Joe Public could mistake for a traveller scrap dealer's £500 smoker... Or am I being cynical...?
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Or am I being cynical...? Mostly true i think, but not completely or there would be no market for executive estate cars with monster engines in, most of them could be mistaken for ordinary models and are not hugely flashy.

dunno, theres a lot of old school money folks I have known over the years where its seriously not about flashing the cash, its about getting a quality product and not showing you spent big money on it.
The "I need people to know I spend £50K on this" attitude is somewhat of the mercantile classes.
But I would probably be more concerned about the resale value...

I would expect their answer to be fucken sie off or similar. ;D can i borrow that? ;D ;D ;D ;D The Mercedes Classic centre will restore cars, if your pockets are deep enough, they´re not too keen on dropping big V8´s into pre war classics and such but you can get aircon and goodies if you´re that way inclined......

Mercedes can be surprisingly helpful to owners of their older cars. Not THAT helpful mind i bet my local vw agent wished they were helpful too, the useful advice i got a while back was "why don't you get a newer car?", so i took all the business direct to Germany where i bought everything i needed to rebuild my car as new, in one go. newer car indeed!

local Merc dealer helped a mate of my dad get parts for a 1936 Mercedes fire engine shipped over from germany. Staright over the parts counter, no "you need our separate obsolete department" or "no longer currernt" or "wasn't a UK model mate" or any of that. Just got the parts and they came in like 2 days

I've always been able to get all my bits from the dealer ok as well, usually next day, they had trouble deciding which ballast resistor my car needed last time but mines got that transistorised ignition, sort of a halfway house between points and full electronic ignition which had quite a few different setups, we guessed in the end and it seems to work fine so far.
