I'd like to say something tht makes me sound clever here, but I can't so I won't !
However if you need a hand chucking a new (different) box in and haven't too much Pug knowledge I will gladly pop and lend a hand in exchange for tea and biscuits !

you sir are a legend !! I have some experiencebut most of my time with spanners was spent with the luxur of a ramp so gearbox on a driveway will be fun..
I'm still trying to source a box as there are apparently 6 variants, any other modern I wouldnt bother but it does 150 miles on 20 litres of fuel without fail no matter how it is driven and my OH loves it to bits and loves driving it...
Even I will admit to enjoying the WHoosh as the turbo kicks in pinning you in the seat as it flies up the road. Oil burner it might be but slow it isnt......

It does sond like the gearbox... I used to look after a few of these when they were taxis tho, and jumping out of gear is as often the fault of the nasty plastic balljoints in the linkage as the box itself. Got o the point where every time ca car came in for a clutch, it got the gearchange links too. They get so much play that they either fall off, leaving you stuck in one gear or wont fully go into gear so it pops out. worth a go first, I'd reckon, there are two links, near the bulkhead just to the passenger side of the exhaust, and IIRC they are available from euro car parts for about a fiver each.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Good point SOC, particularly so if the lower engine mount is a bit iffy, as the engine moves forwards and backwards too much pulling it out of gear. either way give me a shout and i'm there !

Had that fault on my 405(1600 petrol) and it turned out to be the linkage but it jumped out of 1st gear.I got them both from pug dealer for 18 quid but that was 9 years ago.

Take off the end cover of the gearbox and you will find 5th gear. You'll most likely find that the nut holding it together has loosened leading to some teeth being stripped. It can often be repaired with the gearbox in situ.
