I suspect the call centre operator's "computer" is really a one-arm bandit, and just pings up three random digits for every enquiry. Srsly! Have you tried that? I've done it before, 3 times in a row, same company, same car and got 3 completely different quotes. Its insane.

I got one quote for my Merc Insurer: "That's £724, sir" Me: "Oh, I was only paying £230 last year" Insurer: "Alright, how does £210 sound?" WTF?! So he just pulls a £500 cheaper quote out of his ar$e?! WHere did that come from?! Sometimes I suspect they see how much they can squeeze out of you, and if you make noises about it they drop the price quickly.

Strangest thing for me is the fact that the panda is £230 fully comp, but something like a Mercedes E230 is £287 fully comp. Surely the panda should be around £150 in comparison. The potentially expensive bit for the insurance company is covering the third party damage you could do to other people - after all the value of your car would only be a tiny cost in the claim if you had a blow out, lost control, clipped a bus causing it to go down a bank killing 10 people

often brokers will pull different class quote from different companies so your fully comp might be Highways and the Third Party Only might be Lloyds. Different sources = different prices.

I suspect it sometimes comes down to the skill of the operator. I got a quote for my camper with Footman James and when I called back a different operator answered my call. Twenty mins later a whole 25% off my premium and unlimited mileage to boot. He just knew his way around the screens and options better. I insured both our Mercs and my Hillman Minx with Footman James on a group policy. Our 190e was declared modified (its getting a 3.0L transplant) and the total was £544. If I'd just insured my 300TE-24 under a classic policy, Footman James would have charged me £400+ for the privelage. Like WTF?

I had a steep policy on my 2l S Capri, at 2200, and went to change it to a 1.8 Scirocco. They wanted over 2700 for the scirocco. So I called a local group, and got a quote of around 900 for the rocco, and cancelled the insurance with the other boys.

I don't normally get as far as the quote. Old, RWD, BMW and highly modified? No chance! I have to take what I'm given which at the moment is £550 for an E30 BMW 318is, although not heavily modded. For my E21 which is massively modded 2.5 24v I'm looking at about £700-800.

Yup, different person doing the underwriting so it'll be a different quote. One company may be keen to 'buy it in' as well though you'll see it shoot up at renewal time. I'm afraid, as I am one of those evil insurance brokers, I can be found quilty of not always having quoted the cheapest premium. We've all got to make a living . . . .
