Went to the 'wet 'n' wild' custom show at Chasewater yesterday, had a great day until the Sceptre died on the way home... all the symptoms of fuel pump failure (it's on it's third or fourth pump... ) Rang the breakdown number on my insurance and according to them I didn't exist... After going round the houses they said someone would be out within the hour, an hour later someone rang to say they couldn't find me.... then about 1/2 hour later another phone call to say they still can't find me, eventially a muppet turns up, has a vauge poke under the bonnet and tells me he'll call a recovery vehicle.... this turns up after about 3/4 hour.... We left the show at about 4.00, got home at around 7.45.... And to add insult to injury, the Vauxhall dealer wants 160 odd quid for a pump....

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Would it be cheaper to fit a generic electric fuel pump or something instead? Might be easier in the long run?

i don't know why they bother sending out a 'technician' to anything other than brand new computer-controlled cars.... i've had breakdown companies out to my cars about 5 or 6 times over the years and each time it's been a case of wait 2 hours for a man to arrive and tell you that it needs towing, and the truck will be two hours.
only very rarely will a phone operator believe that you've done everything that can possibly be done already to fix it, and to just send a towtruck.

I hate it when they do that I warped the head so badly on a Mini that one of the head studs sheared off and put a dent in the bonnet and they still sent a man in a van to have a look ! Mind you I`m with the AA now and they do seem to actually employ car enthusiasts - the last 2 times I`ve used them they`ve actually gone out of their way to repair a fault (broken clutch pedal on the Focus and sticking carb piston on the Min)

What Vauxhall pump do you need? I've got quite a bit of Vauxhall-related tat kicking about which has no real value (ie. not for XE engines etc.).Let me know and I'll have a rummage...

Vauxhalls mainly have Bosch gear on them do they not ? If this is the case one pump is pretty much the same as another, the one place I would NOT buy such an item is the vauxhall garage, at the very least get one from an auto electrical shop who has an agency for Bosch.

I have always found the AA to be good. Turn up quick with knowledgeable guys who are always friendly. Others may have had bad experiences with them but I'm sticking with the AA.
Years ago when one of my Imps broke down the AA bloke who turned up was a Imp hating Mini nut. ;D

how come you're noshing so many pumps? Also, what engine have you got in? Is this car featured in 'Readers Rides?' The engine is 1.6 Nova GTE lump, mated to a Carlton 5-speed 'box. 1st pump came with the engine - alredy seized 2nd one died due to non vented tank (I think) 3rd one died due to forty-odd year old paint flaking off inside tank This one just died, I recon....

Which insurance company are you with? Footman James, to be fair I think the problem was the garage that the breakdown people (Britania) used.... The stupid thing is we both have AA cover free with our bank account, but both our membership cards were in our respective cars.... BANGS HEAD ON KEYBOARD....

I know some people who have had great experiences with Footman James' breakdown service so you were just unlucky.
