If anyone wants to build any speakers I can point you at a couple of sites with box plans for specific drivers. Maily full range drivers so no crossovers to worry about I`d be interested in that Buildt some speakers as a dumb kid, in the "as large a box as possible to get teh bazz" way ;D

I had some monsters a bit like that design in my flat years ago, they had 15" woofers in em then and giant horn tweeters in the top, i liberated them from a club that went bust when they refused to pay my bill, probably a bit big for my flat but they would make bass low enough you couldnt hear it but it would start everything rattling, it even used to make my front door knocker knock by itself, had em turned on their sides with cushions on top as extra seating.

pretty cool, My dad used to be a DJ when i was a kid, got me interested in speakers and amps and stuff. I got a "how to build loudspeakers" book.... but i've never read it! I just got some Jamo's and Wharfedales on Sony and Cambridge Audio amps and they sound good to me! but in my flat i cant have it too loud! I'd love to have a real expensive top quality set up oneday. Shame it'd be wasted most my music is MP3 now anyway

Weble - good point about MP3. Is it me or does the sound quality of MP3 leave something to be desired?

^ Ogg is alright, but is also lossy. it doesn't seem to suffer as many artifacts (strange noises unrelated to the music) as MP3 though.
Flac is good - Lossless, so you get full cd quality.
Vinyl is even better, IMHO, but it is difficult to fit in your pocket...

yeah MP3's are great in the lorry, in the car or on the move. But when i want to enjoy music, i have to buy the CD and listen at home!

I guess my system is a bit baised.
I have a decent cd player with a toslink cable to my amp, so its all digital. When i plug my Ipod in there is a real noticable difference in quality.
Like other people mentioned, there is a real lack of high frequency clarity and response.
Anyway, back on topic... nice speakers!

depends what bitrate the mp3's are recorded at as to how much quality is lost, i find that in the car (when its moving anyway) 192kbs or over is as clear as a CD although the merc does suffer from some wind noise due to its 30 year old rubbers and pillarless design, i might be able to hear the difference when thats sorted and the carpets have the sound deadening back under them as well.

Ipods use something called AAC which is DRM ridden filth if you buy the music from itunes - I agree here with Mr. Toaster, in a car, there is very little point having awesome quality as there are too many other sources of noise! 192 is fine for cars and I tend to use 320 kbps for home muzak.
