Snap! With holes where it meets the sills and a non-existent bottom section of the rear quarter to boot. Don't ya just lover 70's Vauxhall, don't ya!? I'd be over the moon with your repair work though, looks top notch, I'm literally bricking it at taking the arch off. Can I ask, did you use a lap or butt joint to weld the new arches on?

Yeah "daunting" I think is the word, but once it's off the only way to sort it is to fix it! I used a combination of lap and butt joints as it was useful for lining up the replacement arch and to keep the line of the body. I'm very happy with the result, not concours by any means but it is metal and it will be strong. Get stuck into the Viva with the cutting disc dude! A actually reckon the arches would have been better if they hadn't been "restored", I'm positive just a localised repair done properly would have been fine as most of the original metal was still under the patches. For metal, I've used a combination of Land Rover footwell (new part) as it was nearby and cheap (and a reasonable thickness) and a conveniently close Maurice Maurina. The benefit (I find) from using metal from another car is the shapes that are in the panels. I tend to up some of the stuff I try to make. The roof of a Marina is surprisingly robust too!

These old things can drive you insane (rust etc) but a picture like that makes you see the positive side and a week or two's work has reversed decades of corrosion. Not bad really

More insane ..... Today I thought I might take the opportunity to sort the paint. I've ordered the seam sealer, zinc paint etc etc and all the gear I have run out of to actually prep and paint the car. Problem is, this isn't an off the shelf/manufacturers colour, it needs to be matched. (made from leftovers). I had a chat with Col at Kustom Kolors and he asked if I could drop in a fuel flap or something to get the colour match from. Hmmmm Fuel flap... No. something easily removable and that could be left with him tick, tick, tick, tick BING heh heh, not exactly pocket sized though.

You're welcome, it's an awesome looking car. Would love one that clean.. Yes, I'm currently winning the blue one....but having read this thread I fear you'll be bidding against me!?

Heh heh, I won't be bidding on this one, was very tempted last year when it was just up the road. Hope you get it and make it nice again, always fancied a GLS but the 490 is now filling the late model gap for me. Could use an estate though.
Let us know how you get on!

Well, as you know, there have been a few things afoot recently and generally, apart from being amazingly busy at work, things have been a bit crappy this year. I thought I'd cheer myself up with a small purchase of a set of ATS classics, I mean I know every VW has to have them but to actually fit them in an OEM style to a Vauxhall? Surely not. So I have had them fitted with my "spare" Firestone 205/60/13 (madness isn't it) and stuck them on the car (which I'm sick of looking at, tax is out, no time to fix it up, managed to re-insure it though and hopefully prevented it's further decay). Pics. and I think I'm really not liking them. Maybe with an extra inch of width? Anyway. To really make myself feel better, now that I'm about to be homeless, I don't have to pay the rent so I'm blowing my next pay on the paintjob. What annoys me (still ranting) is that EVERYTHING has got in the way of me fixing my own car. I've had to strip it and start again at least twice after it's been sat outside in the rain. It really grinds my gears. Rant over, I look forward to some fresh paint which will see it shiny and nice for this season and The Gathering then I'll tear the whole thing down next year(ish) and rebuild it from scratch. Mojo will eventually be restored to normal levels

I think it looks great on those wheels! Defo looks better than the wide black steelies, which to my eyes just looked like they didnt fit properly.

i like the look of them, it looks odd at the rear, but you can see from the front that the chrome trim really makes it.
was looking on ebay the last few days for vx's and ventoras etc. one of those don't need really want situations

I'm sorry but those ATS's look the absolute nadgers...!!! They need to stay put on that FE for sure... With regards to the mojo you only need to look at the corking collection of big-boy Griffin's you've got to get those fires burning surely...?! You'll get there in the end sir and you'll have a cracking collection of these gloriously rare old barges when you do...
