Hi All! As ever I come back to trusty RR for a session in much needed advice and inspiration.
I must inform you first, at this point in time my Metro track car is most certainly deceased, stripped and parted out. A car I really enjoyed, also giving me the trackday bug. I do a bit of co-driving and know that professional motorsport is an expensive game so trackdays are still the level for me. Soo....
...I really want to get back into the trackday game! I'm gathering ideas at this stage because I'm currently saving for some new wheels for my Lupo for next year, but after that I want to be back in a trackday project. I also know next year will be a year of bargains, particularly after Christmas! So it could all come together ohh so well.
We all you knowledgeable folk come in is with just that - Knowledge! I need inspiration to fuel the smouldering ash of an idea in my head, to a raging fire of an idea. A well thought out plan almost, covering all avenues and eventuality's.
So my requirements are:
Retro Hot hatch - 60's to 90's
The lighter the better
Availability of performance AND replacement parts: Engine Tuning/Swaps - Brake & Suspension upgrades.
Achievable 200+ BHP
FWD or 4WD (Not so keen on RWD as it's to tempting to drift - Big NO NO at trackdays over here)
Not a big fan of Japaneese stuff - More prefrence to British, German and possibly the French! The Kings of hot hatch after all! Open to suggestions though.
Willing to let it be a longer term project and make it a proper bad boy, properly prepaired, very much unlike the Metro!
Also, one of the reasons the Metro went is the "R" word - Rust. I'm no welder, so cars with good bodywork credentials are preferred, but this can be compromised.
What I do like are VW's and Audi's, originating from my Dad's background accompanied with my experiences in "Nu Wave" VW Scene. Golf MK1's and 2's are a bit too taxed, and my brother already has a MK3 VR6, so Golf's may be unachievable. I LOVE Jetta's but I find it hard to place a motorsport theme on a saloon (However JettaDan has NAILED this). This also rules out my love for a Mk1 Audi 80 Sport as a possibility aswell as a Jetta.
Another Metro/100 is a possibility, VVC conversion etc, just the rust bug gets me. Another Mini is probably out of the equation too, as there quite taxed and even more rusty. Plus engine swaps require fabrication!
Achievable is another point. It has been recommended to keep the "Mojo" I have to keep it achievable, rather than dissapointing myself. This is true to a certain extent, but I would like to keep stepping my game up with each new project. I think i've got all I can think of out through the keyboard and hope you can all help with possible candidates and their Pro's/Con's.
Finally some of my inspirations!
