retro lorries.... ;D or more specifically, getting one home saw this cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=290274368972&Category=29756null&_trksid=p3907.m29on ebay, and though undoubtedly I won't be bidding, it got me thinking about whether I could even drive such a thing? I had a look on the doovla site via the power of google, and came up with this interesting page www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_4022499 - or more interestingly, this little snippet: Holders of a full category B (car) driving licence may drive any of the large vehicles listed below: yadda, yadda yadda ....goods vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1960, used unladen and not drawing a laden trailer so would that include the above sort of thing??? (I have a B and B1 on my driving license card) and would dayinsure cover it lol any pointers chaps?? - oh, and have some retro truckage for your time! - cheers! - kev

I used to drive through Pillerton Priors regularly, and actually remember seeing that K4 when it was working! Yes you can drive stuff like that, though with the 3995cc petrol donkey in that one you probably wouldn't want to go too far..... Go for something reasonably-sized with a Gardner engine in it though and you'll be looking at 20+mpg, they had a reputation for being quite amazingly frugal, one of the reasons the traditional pipe-smoking scotch-swilling Jag-driving 60's 'British Haulage Boss' hung on to them for so long in the face of foreign opposition.

As far as I'm led to believe, if you passed your test before they brought out the written test you can drive up to 7.5 tonnes.

I did only pass my test in 2000 - but I assume a category B / B1 license is the same whenever you passed it?? - anyway, cheers for the info guys, I'm now going to delete said K9 out of my ebay to remove temptation... ...maybe - kev

OMG - how much did I want, nay, yearn to bring this thing back from Canada?? My dream truck! Nothing needed, perfect just as it is. Could have driven it on my license too. Damn it, why didn't I just do it? These things aren't worth anything out there....jsut old scrap as far as the N/Americans are concerned! I was in love (as you can tell from my expression ;D) OMG - I could just see myself tooling around in this thing...... ....one day maybe

I used to drive a K9 wrecker when I was 17 for the recovery garage I used to work for. Had a huge harvey frost on the back.

pre-1960 vintage trucks and busses are excempt from the weight restriction so long as they are not being used commercially. This was a special concession for the historic commerical guys a while ago.
Otherwise, more modern stuff is down to the weight limit on your licence. On mine thats 7.5 ton, on younger licences its 4 or 3.5 ton IIRC

Was talking to the owner of this Merc at a show. It was never registered when new. It was on trade plates for over 30 years by a motor distribution company hauling new cars from Dublin port to various compounds around the city.

How cool is that? I would absolutely love this, complete with the missile of course. Just think every trip to the shops would be like something from the old May Day parades in Moscow. Ah well, one day when my six numbers come up. JB

I drive this on my car licence weigh's 8 Tonne and is steam driven so I can drive it on a normal car licence I've driven a Foden wagon, Robey Express Tractor, various rollers (Even though I haven't got a group G), various traction engines & a Fowler Z7 ploughing engine single handed on a rally field & a couple of traction engines on the road. The Z7 weighing in at over 30 tons was a f**king handful!! ;D
