As you may know i work nights at ASDA (hell) and at dinner last night the conversation whent like this;
"Rob, you handy with cars are'nt you?!"
needless to say after much trying to avoid it on this hot summer day I'm now fitting some brake pads to a saxo for a "bit of pocket money" - so £2.50 then!
anyway has anyone changed any pads on a Saxo/ know if there is anything i should know about?
I'm also doing a service on a corsa next week!

I'm sure it'll not be at all complicated, I changed the pads on my 205 in about 1.4 minutes, including tea-drinking time. If you wanna be sure pop into the local library and check their Haynes book! Thats what I used to do.

Childsplay dear boy ;D
The hardest part will be making sure you get the right bits. For some reason everytime i work on a french car it takes about 6 calls to the motor factors and several deliverys. Hence a five minute job normally lasts all day.

It's not a terribly hard job, I've done the brakes on a Saxo before for a friend (I tried to tell her to buy a retro car but she wouldn't listen and got a f*cked Saxo instead! ;D) As I said it isn't really that complicated, which is odd for a French car, I've worked on other modern Citroens that were complete and utter b*stards!

if its anything like its Pug brothers, one thing to watch is whether it has Girling or Bendix braking componments, There should be some sort of markings on the Brake Master Cylinder fluid pot

mind you don't crack the standard-issue fibregalss 'Kingdom' bumper as they are a bit fragile on those Saxos. Also, if it hasnt been done already paint the calipers in red dulux while you have the wheels off. SORTED M8 INNIT! LOLOLOLOL11111oneone21oneROFL1211@1@ol#!!

i changed the pads on my mate's clio which i was thought was a right b'tchto do until i realised i was trying to undo nuts by turning them the wrong way.
i have no idea why.
after i realised that it was dead simple.

Thats what I used to do. 1.4 minutes....mmmm thats good i will get you to do mine next time just been on about 3.5 hours cant really blame the brakes but the stupid pratt who put the wheel nuts on last time - far too bloody tight!!! was fitted with some stupid locking wheel nuts that rounded off becase they were that tight so have had to drill the stud out!! managed to drill it enough to get the wheel off but snapped stud is still in - so i will just run it on 3 studs for now at least i have changed the pads (ps to make things worse i think i have put the pads in wrong ) aaaaaahhhhhhhh

I hate doing other people's cars - there's always that extra pressure for everything to go right! I wouldn't have thought Paxo brakes would be that complex really... pretty much the same as any other car. But then it is French, so who knows! ;D

Yeah, then theres often the old 'Oi, you know you fixed my brakes a fortnight ago, well the radio packed in yesterday and some feller who sat next to me on the bus said maybe you'd disturbed such and such a wire..... I'll drop it round tonight eh?'
'F**K OFF!'

Cant see there being much of a problem changing the pads on them as long as you have the right pads as has already been said most french cars seem to have several different types of brake on the same year (why?). The main problem I find with working on modern cars is finding that you need "special tools" for changing most bits. Half the time these things are just bent bits of metal to fit in a certain way for locking or whatever. A few weeks ago my mate asked me if I could change the bottom ball joints on his 98 BMW E36 coupe. Not a problem ball joints £15 each seem cheap enough. Spent the next 4 hours removing the first one from the wishbone and a further two trying toget the new one entered into the wishbone with no joy! Sod this check out t`internet only to find "special tool required" £250 for special tool Right check the BMW forums got be some little trick for removing and refitting these. There was. don't BOTHER!! Buy a complete arm with balljoint fitted for £35 instead Not one to give up put my thinking cap on and came up with an idea of a tool to make it fit. Made said tool fitted new joint in 5 minutes ;D The other side took 45 minutes start to finish. The moral of the story:- Google the topic before starting or it could be buy an old car instead ;D

I've had loads of that too, you change the plugs and oil for someone and then the next time the handbrake needs done they blame you and think you're under some obligation to fix it and pay for any spares it needs. Firstly I tell them not to be so f*cking stupid and if they blame me again I'll choke them with their new handbrake cable, but if I do fix it I get them either to buy the bits it needs themselves or pay me for the job up front becuase the amount of people who'll let you pay for all the parts yourself then hope you forget to ask for the money back is unbelievable, if you don't demand the money back they'll cheat you out of it!
