I'm currently having a dabble on this on t'Bay.... I'm fairly clued up on how a standard Herald "works", but does anyone have any expierience of bringing one up to date? I'm thinking that with separate chassis and that huuuuge bonnet it shouldn't be too hard to get modding. The principle aim here is not outright performance... more something that can hack the pace. So a bigger engine, five speed box useable brakes etc.... BUT what the fugg do you do about that bizarre swing axle suspension? with twice the BHP on board that could be an accident waiting to happen.... Am I bonkers, or is this a "do-able" project on a not-too-huge budget?

Cool, get it bought! I think that there is a modification commonly done to Spitfires which involves raising the location point of the transverse leave spring. This is done to help eliminate rear wheel 'tuck' under hard cornering. You could just slam it on coilovers though Then fit some wire wheels. Oh no, now I want one.

I think it's pertinent that my dad would rather walk than drive another Herald...

I've had a few Heralds and Vitesses...I've never actually done it, but I'm convinced there's a BMW six-pot swap possible. Or maybe a 4-pot J (Silvia) swap. Failing that a 1500 Spit engine will give you more modern performance. All the bits for Herald modding are available off the shelf.

I had actually forgot that I owned one ;D ;D Thats how memorable it was. Theres an old bloke sometimes autotests one in our motor club. Completely standard car and every direction change you make causes the back end to jack up higher and higher until it just looks mental. They pretty much had the problem sorted on the MKIV spitfire don't know how much work it would be to fit one of those axles though. Failing that I would just stick a standard live back axle out of a dolomite in and five link it with coil overs.

didn't triumph do a 2.5 straight 6, reckon that'd drop in nicely. Just shove coilovers on and be done with it

Never owned one, but they're supposed to be great fun! The handling can be sorted - maybe talk to Jigsaw. Google them. The six should drop in if you want to keep it Triumph. There was a convsersion that used a Coventry Climax alloy four-pot and I'm sure you could adapt a 930 cc Talbot Sunbeam motor to go in there. Was it Jack Brabham that did 'em...? On the other hand, Street Machine had a yellow one with a 350 Chevy in it years ago... Go for it! I'm

Climax & V8 routes may be a little bit overkill.....
Six-potter from the Vitesse will give the performance required, undoubtedly, but I have a slight concern over economy....
A herald (i assume ) weighs about the same as an unladen swallow, so the engine wouldn't have to be that vast to pull it along. Now there's plenty of bits around these days for putting zetecs in stuff.... I'm thinking that maybe a small-ish capacity Zetec (like a 1400 fiesta lump) would give a good balance and all-round useability.... These must be fairly easy to come by too!
The aim is a car that would be a viable alternative to, say, a five-year-old Fiesta... something that can be reliable and capable of "ordinary" commuting / shopping needs, whilst retaining a nice "retro" feel....
I missed out on the Herald on the Bay, but have found another suitable candidate much closer to home. If anyone has access to one, a few key measurements etc would be most helpful!

How about a 1.25 Zetec from the fiesta, pretty nippy considering what they are.

I'm pretty sure that at least 1 Triumph specialist does a "swing-spring" conversion kit (if memory serves, thwe kit costs about £130 inc. a thicker front anti-rollbar). I remember Practical Classics doing a side-by side on modified Spitfires, and one of them had a Zetec in it. As for triumph motors, lots of people have told me that the 1500 motor has a weak bottom end, so how about the 1850 Dolly motor? Should fit in OK, cheaper to buy than a Sprint motor, runs unleaded, and come with a good overdrive box.

Do it! Heralds are great, theres a heavily modified one near here somewhere, resprayed dark purple, blinging alloys etc. Even better use a Triumph Vitesse, a Herald with 4 headlights with a meaner looks. Theres one in this months PC, black with lots of chrome and full sound system ;D
