hi guys I'm intsrested in uprgrading my performance on my 1984 mark2 polo cl saloon can any one tell me of a double weber carb and induction kit to fit on the car or any other mods that people have done to improve the performance thanks.

1.0 or 1.3? The std pierburg carb is wibblepoo so that would be the first replacement  A suited Weber replacement will improve reliability but for the cost it's probably more economical to drop a more modern engine in there. The Multi Point Injection GT engine (3F code) and short ratio box from the later Mk3 Polo GT has 75bhp and a conversion can be picked up for a couple of hundred quid. Can be fettled with a bit too. Twin Webers can get a bit more costly once you've found a inlet manifold, serviced and rejetted the carbs, and bought the necessary fuel pump, regulators and all the fixings, trumpets etc. I'm doing this for my 1977 Mk1 Polo restoration. It'll drink a bit more fuel than a injected GT engine but that aint really an issue considering the length and nature of the project.  clubpolo.co.uk is a decent source of info (once you've routed through all the more modern curse word!) if you've not seen it already |

weber for the 1.3 are pretty easy to find.
when i converted my coupe S to GT spec the donor
car only cost me £80, i may have spent another £100
or so sorting other bits, so pretty cheap fun.

hi guys thanks for the info i was thinkin of byeing a 1.4l engine of the mark3 and gettin it bored to a 1.6l if possible what do yer think? is there any need for an k&n induction kit if was to just add the twin webbers carbs. thanks.

Isnt there just a 1.6 mk3 engine you can use instead? I would suggest that your first port of call is to asses what your budget is. Thats what i tell most of my customers who call me looking for more power.
Go for DCOE's as they are retro cool, sound cool and you'll be the envy of all your friends or if you can afford it go for throttle bodies and you'll never look back!

mk3's didnt come in 1.6 form. mk4's did but they had ECUs like my 3's so not an easy swap. possibly look for GT your engine or bike carbs/throttle bodys/webbers as said  |

hi guys thanks for the info I was thinkin of buying a 1.4l engine of the mark3 and gettin it bored to a 1.6l if possible what do yer think? is there any need for an k&n induction kit if was to just add the twin webbers carbs. thanks. honestly ? i think you should learn to walk before you run. stick a gt in it if you can, its much faster than you think it is. i used the carb and manifold off my 1.1 and it works just fine. it all went in absolutely perfectly and its an absolute flying machine. once its in and running then you can start to consider what you want to do to it. |

1600cc mk3 golf engine fits, but doesn't develop that much power..
fit some bike carbs, or GT bits..
75bhp gives a lot of fun in these tiny boxes

Can vouch for that,the gt lumps are a lot quicker and more fun than you would think.
A mate had one and it absolutely rinsed Fiesta Zetec-S' etc,and wasn't far off the back of my standard engined mk2 gti

had my GT converted mk2 off the clock with
more to go, clock only went to 100 mph but the
needle swung down to the 6 o'clock position, i think
i surprised the GTi i passed on the way to Stanford Hall
in it last year, not the best of brake set ups though, don't
forget to consider the stopping when upping the power on these.

mk3's didnt come in 1.6 form. mk4's did but they had ECUs like my 3's so not an easy swap. possibly look for GT your engine or bike carbs/throttle bodys/webbers as said depends what you class as the mk3! some people refer to the 6n polo as a mk3 due to the vw naming the polo mk1, mk2, mk2f etc. the 1.6 fitted to the mk4 polo (6n) is just a stroked variation of the 1.4, which is why it doesnt produce that much bhp. they are however good for torque. Fitted with gt multipoint injection or bike carbs they give similar performance levels to a polo g40, so pretty damn quick the std coupe s engine is good for stock polo gt power when fitted with a gk inlet manifold, free flow exhaust and weber replacement carb (i.e. not a weber 40 or similar) you cant just fit a gt cam though due to the way the dizzy operates. if your serious about tuning, you best off looking at some of the dedicated polo forums; www.polo3.co.uk and www.clubpolo.co.uk in particular. |
