Being ever so slightly thick here! Can someone please explain - though I can obviously see the front end isn't 1959 but that's not unusual with land Rover hybrids is it ?

We've been following this on the Landie forum i use, its way to blatant that one. Thats a deliberate deception rather than an upgrade to far scenario! Apart from the plates its a 90/defender.... no argueing it really

Seems the only 1959 part is the VIN tag.
Even if it were a 1959 chassis he's never going to have enough points to retain the number and tax exempt status.

What a fuggin moron, it only takes one or two greedy tossers building that sort of thing and the rozzers and VOSA are gonna be all over old car world. Having the free tax is a great bonus - why take the curse word so blatantly? When you inevitably get found out, (my granny could tell thats not a 1959 vehicle) everyone suffers. The guy needs a good shoeing.

I sent him a message innocently pointing out that it didn't look like a 1959 model. His reply:
"hi dan yes these things are like meccano and has a built up 90 body on"
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

The S2 LR Club take an active part in reporting fraudulent nobbers like this to the relevant authorities, IIRC.

Good, I'm glad they take an active part in saving historic vehicle status for those who don't take the pee! Seen way too many Minis that are obviously late 80's, early 90's carrying a pre-73 plate too, even saw one with a 1.3i engine.
What next, buy a New Beetle and ring it with the identity of a 1962 VW 1200? "Well, I changed the body then put the new chassis on, then the old engine wouldn't fit so I put a newer one in. And interior. But the indicator bulb is original!"

"Built a 90 body on" hmm, 59 chassis = leafs, 90s/Defenders are coils, w/b is different etc.
ID is on the bulkhead so is easy to swap: looking for mine I saw lots of S3s pretending to be S2s on fleabay and elsewhere... Some may just be unintentional tax evaders from donks ago due to swaps or whatever, but quite a few fakes out there. That one up there is just dumb though!

Some may just be unintentional tax evaders from donks ago due to swaps or whatever, but quite a few fakes out there. That one up there is just dumb though! to be fair it can be easy for late (1969) series IIa's to be mistaken for series III's as at the end of production of the IIa's they did actually put the lights in the wings, and if someone looses the original metal mesh grille and substitutes a later plastic sIII one, and has a "lux" (rolled front) bonnet on, which was an option, then it can be very easy to mix the two up when you're not looking at the interior (sIII had dash/dials around the steering wheel, sIIa have them in the centre of the dash). The big tell is the sIII has the air vent in the wing, but as parts are interchangeable across few series, it is not uncommon for someone to put a sIII wing onto a sIIa if theirs has been dented up. My car was frequently mistaken, even by land rover enthusiasts (except for a few more knowledgeable ones) for a series III although I had a full history for it and even land rover traceability documentation. She was definitely a '69 IIa. The only thing that hid it initially is that her metal grille had been lost and replaced with a plastic one, I managed to find a genuine replacement though. The vehicle in the OP however is very clearly a defender! Kirsty

The fakes I saw had S3 interiors, the placcy gear going on and the later column etc. There's also legit Defender-fronted Series o'course, but that one there - zero out of ten for fakery effort!!

selling it as an older tax exempt to get more money for it is obviously not on but there are a lot of cars out there that could fall under the category of too far from the original vehicle but only because they have evolved that way over the years and its down to the greedy ones that just want to make a profit out of selling rung over cars that will ruin the modified classic car scene

Irony is, his asking price isnt far away from the value of a clean late 90's defender 90 and his blatent ringing to save £180 a year is putting all the buyers off what would otherwise be a saleable landy. Oh well.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I've seen the usual series landy rebuilt with parts off later 90 / 110 defenders, hey even my one has a defender bulkhead fitted, but at least they keep the original wheelbase as on the v5, 88". That is clearly a 90 chassis there, definately not even a coil sprung 88 which you can buy off the shelf these days.
