either a pug 205gti (possibly a 309 gti if you can find a 3-door one - allegedly better handling) for FWD win, or an E30 BMW 3 series like a 325 for RWD drift skillz.
I ran a 205 as a trackday car and "spare" daily car and it was a real hoot. great fun to drive and reasonably competitive on the track. Prices have risen in recent years though, but there is a massive range of parts and accessories for them.

Not cosmetically mint, but perfectly useable. Plenty dead & chavved e36's in the breakers too. £1000 should buy a very good one I reckon.

205 GTi... although prices are picking up now. Over the past year or so the prices of 1.9s have doubled or even trippled!

I'd go with a BM, definitely a 318 if you intend to use it daily - an iS would be the one to shoot for. 325's lovely but it will make you wince a little regarding fuel consumption if you're driving it aggressively. Or at all

XR4x4 with a 200bhp 24v cossie lump dropped, can just about be done for a grand and should still top 30mpg in normal use and do 145mph given the chance.

Primera GT. 150bhp, tidy handling, mechanically indestructible.
If you stripped out the trim aircon etc it would fly.

Better still and even more sleeperish, ratty mk5 Cortina for a few £100, drop in a 24v Cossy, you need a 2.3ltr Tina rear axle, 2.8i Capri bellhousing, a few choice suspension upgrades = win.

Sierra cossie performance for a quarter of the price.

I dunno if there are different versions of those primera gts? my mate had one as a company car maybe 5 or 6 years ago and it seemed very underpowered right from new, quite revvy but in a straight line it couldnt keep up with his girfriends sierra saphire twink which are sposed to be about 130bhp.
