Despite an additicion to all things of a bicycle nature, I've never ridden a fixed wheel bike, I know where there is an old (1980's I'd guess) suitable frame and component donor - I feel a cunning plan for my next bike project forming ;D

good to see a fixie thread on here. I've been riding my joe waugh for about 18months first off as a full road bike with 105, then as a single speed and for the last year as a fixie. The only pics I have of it are from when i first went fixed: and this was taken after we rode the great north run route before the runners set off this year (i'm in the middle) Its now brakeless and with a tiny pair of dildo bars ! I Love it ! ;D

I know you said it brakeless now, but a rear brake? Surely you'd have been better off with a front brake?

I run my fixie with a rear brake only ... it means you can skid it easily when things get tech, like going down sets of stairs in towns. Mine is based on a xc bike though.

Have a look at Fixed and Fixed 2 : www.chargebikes.com/video/ These guys are menkal well kinda, suppose they are like light big twitchy BMX's and they may be ex BMX riding dablers ?? anyway, an eye opener to me, makes my own single speed 'city' style look very tame! very minimalist, no official brakes, fair enough,, but no grips. and no helmet! Cool but some of the anti social stuff lets it down.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Is it just me or is it not mildly embarrassing to watch adults trying to impress by doing skids on these bikes? when you compare to what even a modest rider can achieve on a BMX bike? Compare..... to............ I'm not knocking 'fixies' but I think they should stick to what they do best....and thats go fast!..........That Juliet Eliott bird in vid is fit though

my new fixie arrived today while I was out - just dragged it out of the box, put it all together and fitted it up as I wanted it and just took it for the maiden voyage - never ridden fixed wheel before, it was dark and there was ice everywhere - scared myself a couple of times but I love it. Will be taking it for a proper blast in daylight on Thursday.....
