engine on the Yellow camper runs and drives! Sounds like a leaf blower, no clutch pedal and not much in the way of brakes. But moves under its own power. Running roadkill style with a electric fuel pump and a can. I've started pulling it apart, so far i've found quite a few bits my white van are missing. I've cleaned the front seats up and will be transferring them over 70k mile seats are so much more supportive than 200k+ mile seats!

seats out of the yellow van have cleaned up nicely, so much better than the originals (left!) yellow van has also provided the front floor mat which was missing from my van, much better than the tatty off cut of carpet I've also started working on the exhaust, the original was so far past its best and has been patched up so many times it was time to start again. New exhausts haven't been available for years, so time to make my own. I've used some universal parts but I needed some silencers. Most of the aftermarket silencers seem to be performance orientated, i needed something cheap, easily replaceable and quiet! After a few hours looking in old exhaust catalogues I think i;ve found some solutions. cutting the knackered exhaust off my solution so far, volvo 2.0 740 silencer about £20, some straight bits of pipe, Jetex over axle pipe. tailpipe is 1.8 golf front pipe first bit temporarily fitted Need to sort the angle of the front pipe next challenge is changing the angle of the jetex over axle pipe hopefully should be able to do that with the Oxyacetylene torch at work

Does the yellow van still hang around? I could make use of some parts. I had considered having the engine as a spare, if it is any good. Also, the fender panels look quite solid. I thought about replacing mine, although they are fine. What I really want to do is not ruin the original ones while trying to get chrome-plated wings. Another thing I could achieve while I'm at it is having a fender mirror like those the HiAces came with in japan. I plan on doing a lot of metalworking on the doors and some of the panels during winter, and if I were to acquire a wing mirror by then, I could cover up the mounting holes for the right hand door mirror. Like this:

Our Audit Team used one of these in late 70's. Was quite good, but the lack of power when fully laden, was frustrating. Would there be a reasonably powerful straight swop Toyota engine that could solve the problem?

Hello,
Please can you help me. I'm making a television show for ITV and we are looking to use a 1970's camper van for the shoot. I've just seen your van online and I'd love to talk to you if you still have it as it's fantastic. Please could you get in touch?
My number is 07976 838487 and my email is adam.wimpenny@mac.com
many thanks
Adam Wimpenny

Parts donor is about to meet its maker, just salvaging the last bits of use. Including the un-dented front panel. Just realized that I have nearly owned this van for 10 years!!

Hey Mat - living the dream for 10 years! This thread has been/ is the inspiration with my own van. I'm revisiting this thread as we're about to replace my 12r with the 18r engine, same you have. Might need to pm you for some info on differences in engine mounts etc.

I'm probably a year too late but do you still have your doner vehicle? I'm looking for a 1980 hiace speedometer. Mine's broken. Would appreciate any leads. Cheers

Hi sorry I sold the dash and dial cluster a while ago. There was a guy breaking a hiace camper on eBay last year. eBay name was 'carribbeanlover' or something similar! Might be worth sending him a message I moved the yellow vans 1.6 12r engine this week. If any one is looking for one of those!!

Hi, do you still have the gearbox for the 12r engine? I've just had a bit of a disaster with mine!
