street use at the moment. which implies you want to do something with it eventually what that is will determine what material specs, how you mount it, how many attachment points, who you need to weld it up etc etc etc

For what reason are you fitting the cage? Is it to stiffen the shell or just from a safety aspect, as unless you're wearing a helmet they tend to be more dangerous than none at all.

A roll cage for a road car is probably a bad idea, unless you are going to be using decent seats and harnesses (and helmet really).
What do you hope to achieve with this cage?

I am going to be making a roll cage for my beetle soon and am looking for info on what metal to use. what size/thickness and any other pointers people may have. thanks Stephan cds steel (cold drawn steel) ~ 40 mm diameter seems to look fairly good - mine is actually slightly less than that but it's OK It's a bloody PITA for a daily driver but same with bucket seats and four points I have padded an awfull lot out but I still bang my head occasionally and it hurts without a helmet on Track work tho it's perfect

cfs 42 x 3mm wall thickness or 1 5/8" if you do imperial. as far as I'm aware cds doesnt excist any more in name. chances are you wont bend it in a normal hydrolic bender as you really need a rotary draw bender to stop the tube collapsing as you bend. though you may get away with normal bender if you use the perfect size former. prices have shot up due to all steels going up.rate at my nearest stockists was just under £10 per meter two days ago. will be a while befor the crash in scrap steel trickles its way through to the stockists. make sure you build it as tight to the body as possible that way you shouldnt bang youre head at all. as to why you want a cage. well i don't care as its youre car so do what you want with it . i run a caged car on the street.cant say its caused any problems or discomfort

If he's not building it to regs would he not get away with 1.6mm wall? Thats what i was planning to do with the citroen. Keeps the wieght (and cost) down but should still give enough strength and protection for road and occasional track use.

main reason is a bit extra strength, i wanna fit harnesses properly and it will keep car stiffer as the bigger engine chucks it about a fair bit.
i was planning on keeping the cage as hidden and tight to the body as possible as i want to keep the the car looking stock and basic as pos.

If I was you I'd build any cage to the spec that the MSA (Motor Sport Association) requires for National level motorsport in the UK. The spec is specified in their rule book - called the 'Blue Book'. You need to either get hold of a copy of this or get someone here to cut & paste the text onto this forum. The rules haven't changed for years so any copy of the blue book will do. The spec specifies the type & size of material to use, what dimensions to bend it to, and how to weld fixings on. The regs aren't too tight so don't get worried! Please note that if you did then want to do some 'proper' motorsport in it that requires a cage (eg racing) then you would need to obtain a certificate for it, which costs a lot. Won't be an issue if you only expect to do rwyb etc.

It might be worth adding that if you want to do ANY MSA sanctioned drag racing, that is to take it further than RWYB then your cage MUST be built to MSA regulations, even if it is not necessarily required by your ET. It's also worth mentioning that the Blue Book regs for cages are insufficient for Drag Racing, the VWDRC has a link on the download page ( www.vwdrc.com/downloads) to a copy of the rollcage section of the "White Book" (Drag Racing Rule Book) which I'd recommend you read if you have ANY possibly intention of taking your drag racing any further than RWYB. If you do wanna get involved then a VWDRC associate membership is only £5 and there's a whole bunch of people on their members forum that know everything there is to know about cageing a Beetle

Hey Mate... Drag Racing Cage specs are available on the VWDRC website as a downloadable PDF - www.vwdrc.com/files/roll.pdfIf you're gonna cage your car, it makes sense to me to build it to MSA Spec, as even though you don't want to compete at the moment - it'll save you having to redo the cage if you change your mind. **EDIT - Stephan - just sent you a PM **
