Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a classic(ish) car soon, something mid 80's or before, and was just wondering if you'd have any advice for some of the better retro cars available? bear in mind I'm only 19 so can't have anything with massive power, but was thinking something like a basic Capri/manta, maybe a scirocco to get started, so as i said, any advice? it'll all be appreciated, c.u.later

Capri would be a good choice as they are not yet stupid money, you can get small engined ones and they are really easy to fix and get parts for, just don't buy a rusty one.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Sounds like you like you like the Coupe shape so how about an Audi 80 Coupe or for something a little different a Nissan Sunny ZX Coupe?

Capri might be a bit much to insure for a 19 year old. Even the 4 pots are regarded with some fear by insurers despite the fact that a 1.2 Corsa is faster...
Fords are easy to work on and easy to get bits for. Plenty of support in the aftermarket, etc. A nice Mk1/Mk2 Fiesta would be a cheap to buy car and they are light so can be made quick without the big power which means big insurance. I kinda like the old Mk3 Escort, but try find a good one now... Mk4 Escort is almost the same car, more of them about, seem to have less "cred" in retro circles though. I have happy memories of driving both when new cars, so I'd look at them.
You could check what we did when we were young - we found out that Cortinas were just as fast as Capris and in many cases handled as good or better than the Capri but the insurance was way cheaper! A Mk5 1.6 or 2.0 shouldn't break the bank and they are 100% great retro cars, easy to work on, easy to modify, comfy, roomy, can be made to handle well, you can't lose.
I'd not turn down any interesting J stuff or a decent Chevette or Mk1 Astra or Mk1 or Mk2 Cavalier either.

oopsie, I'm 18, not 19, musta slipped on the old numpad, so guessing there's even less of a chance of me being insured on a capri damn. and bit random actually, but my dad's just got an old corolla in, only d reg so not quite retro cool (to most) but I do think that might look quite nice with some nice rims and a drop? suggestions still welcome, but that is tempting me, I'm very impulsive see c.u.later

80's Corolla's are winners all round. Sounds like a good option and a bit different compared to a Capri etc.

Capri would be a great first retro IMO although the 4 pot are far from fast, they are cheap and easily tuned. Insurance shouldn't be too steep if you shop around!
Whatever you get, stick some nice low offset rims on it and slam it into the weeds. This works with almost every car ever made and looks awesome ;D

corrola d reg could be a retro win for the next generation. i quite like the idea of a d-reg corrola - get some photos up so can do a photoshop drop on it!
early 90's rover 200 are sleepers - the 1.4 looks curse word but its pretty quick! the 1.6 even better - same engine as the crx!

no photos, but after basic wiki-ing, I think the corolla is the e80 liftback? and its only a 1.3, but nothing that cant be solved with an engine swap some pics I found on the web (the one we got looks a bit nicer, in a dark grey and a bit of a spoiler, alloys etc): www.stopbuyingcrap.com/pics/sbc/curse word/toyota-e80-hatch.jpg[/img] I'll try and upload some pics soon, then would someone mind doing a virtual drop and alloys for me? c.u.later

18 and needing some cool wheels ? Get a Trabant. Oodles of fun. Cheap to run. Mega spares and if you really have to, you can happily lower one & give it a flashy paint job. A Trab will give a Fiesta or Nova a good run for its money around town. I know. I lost my mate in his Pug 405 yesterday!! I love them, Ive had seven. This is my current car . . . . se below.
