This was bound to happen and the housing market is one of if not the mojor cause of all of this.
Until first time houses drop back in line with the 3 times yearly salary bracket for the average jo then it's going to carry on.
The good news is people will be selling off parts and projects left right and center, bad if it's you and i feel for you, if your one of these people who owns 90 houses plus cause you got luck, time to feel unlucky, it aint worth didly to rent and i am going to buy your 7 series when your skint for £200 and blow it's tires off in front of you.
Long live retro buying.
Ready yourselves for the come get it for free from me grandads garage, scrap man want's £50 to take it away.

My dad has been looking for a newer car, Polo, Corsa etc. and said that the local VW dealer is selling stuff that normally they'd get rid of as it was under the price of stuff they used to sell, ie. nothing under 5K etc.
They were keeping them to sell on the forecourt.

Whilst I'm happy that car prices are coming back down, and MOT'd retros will hopefully be back into couple 'undred territory again, I can see a slight downside, as it brings back the spectre of drunken eBay car purchases! A few times I've had one too many shandys and stuck an £81.50 punt on a car that I don't have space for, have no way of getting to and have no way of knowing if it's a total shed or not. When prices were high, even "Drunken BenzBoy" knew his limits and didn't bid over a ton for stuff, so I always lost the auction as they'd go for hundreds. Now, there's a very real possibility of me "accidentally" buying a car for fifty quid again. ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png)

^^^ Hahaha, gotta love ebay with beer goggles on. There's gonna be a hell of a lot of cheap luxobarges around to pinch the engines out of. E30 with 750i V12? Mk2 Cortina with ST24 V6 or similar? Locost with Lexus V8?

Its sad to say I am in a growth industry at the moment , being a foster carer I know its a cold hard fact that financial hardship causes an increase in domestic violence and more kids going into the care system.

Aye, we do redundancy counciling as a consultancy service and we are planning on being busy...
I am feeling fairly secure, but my wife works for one of the banks that is in reciept of Government Assistance and involved in a merger with another bank. We used to use heer share-save scheme to pay for stuff, as it was a decent little scheme, but when the share price falls by 400% the scheme is valueless and I was hoping to use that money for a rewire of our house, which is much needed (we have parts of the house where the lights don't work ATM)
So I may have to sell a car to pay for that now.
And as prices are falling, I won't get top dollar, so I might have to sell two... Its like chosing which of your children to put up for adoption!
I remember the last couple of recessions. Not looking forward to it again.

I was chatting to my ex sales manager at Audi the other day. They're laying off used car buyers as the dealerships can't get rid of the stock they have. They had a really difficult September, with new car enquiries well below the norm for that time of year.
Another example is a used Audi Q7 at the moment is dropping over 2k a month in book value, so dealers just can't afford to have them standing around eating into their profits.
I think the slowdown will have a more pronounced effect on Audi (moreso than other prestige stuff) as a brand, because there are equally good substitutes available from VW, Seat, and Skoda.

I took my dead Rover diesel to the scrap metal place on Saturday. I received the princely sum of £22.57 for it :-( Apparently, the ferrous scrap price has steadily fallen over the last week from ~£80/tonne to £20 on Saturday. And this from a high of over £200 about six months ago. I was chatting to the boss and he said on Monday morning last week, the price for alloy wheels was £800/tonne, by lunchtime it had fallen to £267!! The reason? A belief that the US are going in to near depression, hence no market for cheap Chinese goods, hence no demand for our scrap metal. The up side is, when people finally realise, we should see the end of silly reserves (like £150) on 'spares or repairs' cars on eBay!!! Coincidentally I ran into a friend whilst visiting the breakers on Saturday who told me pretty much the same - our local scrap prices are about £10/tonne.

Not looking forward to it again. Yup, I know the feeling. Earlier this summer I gave notice at work as my wife and I are planning to move to East Sussex in the new year. I asked to stay on until the end of the year. Not to be as they were going to make me redundant anyhow. We should be able to weather the storm as my wife is a pharmacist for which there is always a demand. However it still looks to be tight for a few months at least.

Ive just come back from Germany and found that the Lorry I drive for my employers hasnt moved for the period ive been away, more than that another truck has been laid up too due to lack of work. We only have 5 trucks too!
We supply alot of raw material to car manufacturers including Nissan Sunderland and the need for raw materials has dropped right down, as a result were getting less and less work. There are loads of hauliers going bump at the moment so the HGV driving jobs market is awash with drivers looking for work and many operators are offering minimum wage. Forget what you hear abut HGV drivers getting 40k, its total bull!
I don't live outside my means by any stretch of the imagination but weve got a mortgage to pay and are looking ino starting a family within the next couple of years. This recession could change all that. If I lose my job ive got no change of finding another on the same money, the mortgage could well be a real stretch.

and as another bummer, the pound is falling against the dollar just as I was hoping to put in an order for the stuff I needed for the Cadillac engine project, means that effectively all those parts are like 20% dearer now than three weeks ago. Arzez.

Tim, hearing of some truck driver's jobs previously known as pretty damned stable up in the air now. The sad thing is when a decent sized company go down it's not just the poor employees of that company that lose their jobs it's the associated businesses that go with it, such as hauliers.

there are suggestions of unemployment hitting 3 million again.
In the last recession unemployment rose by 50,000 a month every month for nearly 3 years.
We currently have 1.8 million unemployed which is a 10 year record or something. Thats expected to hit 2 million around xmas.
Certainly could be a time to blag and stockpile classics during 2009/10. One finance guy on Radio4 said yesterday they expect the downturn to last about 30 months. But then these are the same finance experts who were telling us a consumer boom based on credit was a sustainable economic model 12 months ago...
Maybe Gordon Brown can abolish a tax after all - scene tax...
We'll see.
