I've been looking at all the fun and games everyone had at RAF Marham and have decided that it would be just grand if I could play with the cool kids too.
Thing is, I know nothing about all that "driving round corners fast" thing that you do. ;D
Basically, when I manage to get some cash together I was thinking about getting a car to do that sort of thing in, but have no idea what kind of events there are.
I'm not talking stuff that costs a lot of money, or anything very serious - I was thinking more RWYB but with corners. Does this sort of thing happen?
It's just idle musings at the moment. No firm plans to actually do anything as I don't have the cash but if/when I do, I'd quite like to. ;D

Well, track days vary a fair amount in price. Marham is £70 for one day, which IMHO is pretty reasonable. happens twice a year Donington was £120 for a day IIRC which, considering its a "proper" race circuit is pretty reasonable. Think they do theirs pretty regular. dates will be on their website. Basically, airfield days are cheaper, but the tarmac tends to be harder on the tyres, and theres generally more run-off, but proper tracks are 'proper' tracks so you can imagine being in the BTCC as you go round LOL. If you want to try drifting, a DWYB day at Santa pod is £60 or 65 I forget, and is a good way to get to grips with car control. There are events on all the time at various tracks. Just bare in mind petrol to get there, the fact you arent insured on track, and whether you want to tow it, or do as I do and drive everywhere with all your tools and tyres in. As for driving round corners fast, take it slow to start with until you get a feel for the car then start pushing bit by bit. For working out lines and braking points its good to be taken out by someone who knows the score on that track. I learnt a lot from a ride out with BC on my first Marham its great fun for sure Just find something thats cheap enough to buy and run, but still has a fair bit of 'go' to it. Ive yet to go to a track day to find people with an attitude, everyones been friendly and helpful. Even when I had the ropey white carlton of doom round donington I know most of what I'm saying is probably pretty obvious! ;D

I have to admit its something i've thought about doing, but having had the Gti 205 painted I decided not to bother, lest I wreck it. Now i've got the XS 205 i've got something I can use.

The GTI would be an absolute WEAPON! It is very pretty to be throwing around a track though. I missed your new purchase! Must get to see it at some point. Thanks for the info Colonelk, that's the kind of think I was "pipe-dreaming" of. As I'm thinking about getting a 2nd car, I thought I might as well try to get something that's a little bit quick... or just not incredibly slow and wallowy like 99% of my other car purchases have been! Then I could maybe have some track fun with it. Like I say, just idle musings at the minute but it would be loads of fun.

Just bare in mind petrol to get there, the fact you arent insured on track, and whether you want to tow it, or do as I do and drive everywhere with all your tools and tyres in. And petrol for while you're on the track as well. My Legacy managed 12mpg round Marham, something with more power would do even worse - I think Utterpiffle's Merc was well into single figures. You can easily get through a whole tank in a day. There's nothing worse than having to come off the track halfway through the day because you've run out of jungle juice.

I'm going to bear this sort of shennanigans in mind if I get some spare cash to make an automotive purchase in the near future - it looks massive fun!

Hey, don't bring me into this. I got a very respectable 7.6mpg on track! BenzBoy, go find a cheap base spec w202 c-class ('93-'00). The earlier the better (pre '95) as they have no driver aids. Cut the coils, throw the interior away, go play. They are cheaper than you might expect - actually quite nice cars too! Like this, but pref 2l or 2.2l petrol. cgi.ebay.co.uk/1994-MERCEDES-C180-RED_W0QQitemZ130262185932QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130262185932Speak to BigPerm about his trackday car when he gets back from Vegas this weekend - owes him very little money, and he surprises even the Evo and Lotus drivers!

airfield trackdays are the best! loads of space and nothing to hit if you need run off other than cones. some novice only trackdays herea little novice info hereor try www.javelintrackdays.co.uk/and bookatrack.com/keep an eye on PH forums too, theres a board with trackdays on. you will need a lid and a fire extinguisher. a pair of spare rims to drive home on as no-one wants points for driving home on bald tyres from the track. take some extra fuel, not just foir the day but makes it easier to get home if all the garages are shut on the way home at 9pm on sunday evening. see if you can find or befriend someone who has a little experience- it takes your nerves away a bit if you've at least got someone to chat to. turn up to the track well before the drivers briefing (which you need to attend if you want to go out on track), they will tell you a fair bit about track protocol, marshall points, flags and safety. remember the breifing and keep your eyes open and you should make it round without hassle. as for cars, anything will do- as proved by wuvvum and his £160 legacy! cheap e36 318i or something would be a good first car. you won't cry when it goes bang if you get a car to hate ;D and i took a full tank of gas to marham, agssed up with 20l during the day (fuel surge) and drove home on the same tank. if the track had opened after the briefing and the fog hadn't held it all back, I reckon I'd have used all that 20litres and had to stick the 10 litres in another can I brought with me. carbon footprint? my shoes are size 24 ;D

Retro rides have been attending Marham for a couple of years (as guests of the ABS) but this time we had our own official spaces and were sanctioned as an "Approved" forum Next one will be in April next year and it will be promoted in the events section Castle combe did a Retro and sports car day this year hopefully we can get some good attendance at this next year E30 is a good choice nice balanced handling and very avaliable and cheap as chips

there's plenty of people around who can teach you the basics.
If you come to the Marham event, just come and find me, I'll give you the "standard" training course.
don't be scared of fuel consumption, our Jag does an average "less than 7mpg" on the track

Thanks a lot fellas . It looks massive fun and pretty accessible! I think it would take the edge off of having to get a "sensible" car if I can use it for hooning around a track aswell! ;D B&D - Great write-up, plenty of info there!

I'm gonna run the coupe round when i get it to a suitably reliable state, i don't care if its not very fast, does 2mpg or handles like an ocean liner, i shall look cool while being overtaken.

I think the Marham pics have inspired a few of us. I've always thought I'd like to do some trackdays but when I've had a suitable car I've not had the money and vice versa.
Having said that, £70 for a day at Marham is very reasonable indeed - I'd always been under the impression these things were into 3 figures.
Watch this space . . .
