Its really not looking like I shall have the skills/equipment or financial status needed to get the merc back on the road any time soon and as we all know nothing kills a car faster than leaving it idle. So I'm considering selling it as currently with some work it could be a great car again. What I'd like to ask is how much you guys think its worth or how much you might buy it for if you wanted to buy it. This isn't a for sale thread yet, just trying to get an idea. What I have is a an untaxed, un MOT'd 1984 Merc 230ce. It failed its last MOT just before RR'08 on NSR break pipe, Handbrake efficiency, and some rust on the NS sill in the area of the seatbelt mount and the rear subframe mount. I had simmilar problems rectified last year on the OS plus some welding in the OSF inner wing that cost about £400. There is some rust in the rear panel and all the wheel arches have started to go. Otherwise its in nice condition, It starts, runs and drives well, everything works 4x Electric windows, sunroof, ns mirror. Its been the most reliable car i've owned, and that includes our modern. I also have a near complete, but non running spares car, the same colour with two good front wings. I'd like to think that they are worth £500 but what do you recon? A few weeks before it failed its MOT and as it looks now, I have a set of factory trims and a set of mexican hats, plus another set of steels and trims on the spares car.

I'd say that if you put it in the back pages of PC you'd find a buyer quite quickly at that price.
Just have to sit on it for a month or two till the mag goes to press.
Ebay will get you 1,278 emails from illiterate mongs, all saying HI M8 WUD U TAK 100 CASH COLECT TONITE WIV HIAB.... FS&W here would probably mostly see lots of nice comments and '..if onlys' but no hard sale, unless you're lucky and some secret squirrel is actively after one.....

Without an MOT its worth not much more than scrap money to most people i'm afraid even though it looks nice as almost everyone is frightened of old Mercs, bear in mind theres a minty road worthy one in the for sale section for 2 grand and its been there a while even at that money.

Have to agree with Mr PUT. Sorry Mark but with no tax and test you´re only going to get three hundred quid max for it. Although worth a lot more they just don´t have that "Scene tax" that would help you out now. It´s probably worth more in bits.... Is there no easiercheaper way of getting it through the MOT mate?

Ask nicely for someone on here to Weld it up for a few beers and biscuits, fix the brake pipe, adjust the handbrake and its win win! I'm unsure where Chichester is (Just looked, 187 miles ), but if it was close enough i'd be happy to weld her... Plates costs pence, so its only someones time and were all friends here!

Would be awsome if someone local could help, I'm quite happy to be dogs body tea/beer supplier and of course if there is anything laser cut acrylic wise i could do for them it would be a pleasure. Remote controll lowrider anyone? PCD Gauge?
I'm right down on the south coast, halfish way between Portsmouth and Brighton. PO20

Hopefully someone'll help out with melting stuff, but if it turns out no-one's able, how about taking the wings (if you need 'em) and anything else useful off the spares motor and scrapping that? Use that cash to fund fixes on the other one. Just a 'backup' thought.

I agree with ^^ those people ^^ - an MOT will make it a much easier car to sell.
I'm in a similar situation to you, but I steadfastly refuse to ever sell my car. I know it's not having the best time sitting outside half-finished and slowly deteriorating, but it just means I'll have to work harder when I do get the means to fix her. ;D
If I was closer I'd gladly help. Are you really sure you want to sell it? It must be a tough decision.

Or even ask someone to show you the basics of welding (I bet there are some tutorials on Youtube even), then borrow/buy a welder an do it yourself.
As for the handbreak and Breakpipe thats Haynes manual stuff so simple to sort.

Looks like a really nice car!! I'm in the same situation too with my Austin 1100. It won't pass an MOT due to a big hole and I don't have the skills to fix it, or the time, But if I sell it now it won't be worth more than £500 (I paid 3x that for it). Everyone is telling me to fix mine and sell it with a fresh MOT, so I'd suggest the same. I'm just suffering from a mental block where my 1100 is concerned - I just find it impossible to get cracking and pull my finger out. If I had the space and time I'd give you £500 for it....unless you fancy a swap for a 1969 Austin 1100?

The brake flexies are really easy. Well, providing the bleed nipples aren't seized. And the unions aren't stuck and twist the solid pipe in half like happened to me... it was a good job it did that though, as it evidently needed replacing!
The welding sounds like it's mostly hidden, so no time-consuming tarting up with filler etc. But with all these things you inevitably find more grot once you start digging.

After doing some research I would have thought it would be worth at least £500, if not more. Heres some of the cars I've seen for sale; they're all minters, but that gives you an idea of how much a non-MOTd car should be worth: For sale for £3950 For sale for £4750 For sale for £7995 Obviously it's difficult to say exactly how much yours is worth as there's nothing similar for sale, but these healthy prices suggest that lesser condition cars should do quite well...

Sorry to hear about your probs Mark. I def agree it would be worth putting a mot on it. At least if you keep it you 'know' the car! Ive had mine for sale for ages ,and agree with pog about comments on e bay and here! Everyone wants me to give it to them ,and deliver it free as well!

I've found a reasonable old guy who welds pretty well -outskirts of yapton. You'd need to get the car to him though- and he can talk for Britain. PM me if it's of help
