Two Derbys on the same peice of road ;D I dropped off some friends after going to a gig in Northampton (Saw the Dears, who were awsome BTW ) They are also enthusiasts of old VWs and they've fairly recently aquired the orange Derby. Their car is an 'S' model which is the real base spec model, without any chrome trim, cloth seats and no passenger sun visor! As both our cars are early 79s on 'T' plates the comparison is interesting (well, for me it is ) Like mine it is very low mileage - only 24K and is in probably cleaner condition to mine Would look good with this kind of treatment.... P.S; I've just done a preview & realised that my top picture is darker than it appeared on the backlit screen of my camera Sorry you'll just have to trust me that there is two Derbys in it

Did you see the maroon one go on eBay - about £300 I think it was. Low mileage, W plate etc etc.

If only everything in life was as cool as a retro VW racer.

Low mileage, W plate etc etc. Yes I did - there seems to be a suprising number of them about considering going back a short while many/most VW enthusiasts didn't even know what a Derby was. The red one was described as having some surface rust on the front wings and rear wheel arches - as you know with these cars, if there's visible rust on the outside then its likely there is a whole house of horrors once you start delving deeper

Take my red car as an example........ Oh no - I thought the Jettas were more resiliant to the old iron cancer The Mk1 Polo & Derbys were Italian styled, but seemed to be made from Italian spec metal too

Mine has little bits all over the place. Tiny stone chips that seem to be getting bigger all the time. There's even some on the roof. Thats why it now has primer all over it, as I thought if I leave it too long it'll get too bad and would be better treated now, despite ruining the look of the car.
I've got replacement wings and a complete front panel. I've treated the bottoms of the doors before they get too bad, as well as the boot lid. Done one arch and need to do the other. Then it should last till next year without getting worse, and hopefully it'll get a full strip-down, respray and rebuild.

When i was at college we had two Derby's in the workshop , an orange one and a silver one, for practicing on. Thats the only reason i know what one is. And I can safley say that since then i don't think i've ever seen one on the road. Shame really cos the amount of time i spent changing clutches and brake shoes ect on those things and i've never had a chance to put those skills into practice ;D ;D ;D

Thats the one tarquinbevilastard! - the number plate looks like an abreviation for 'Dodgy S**t' Derby geek...... Note; that it has an incorrect front bumper - its not supposed to have one with a chrome strip

There is a nice yellow Derby round here (Warrington) that I occasionally see and also a brown one too. There are still a few about, know what you mean about the Italian spec metal though! I have a few mint VW brochures from various years of the model ranges and some Polo and Derby ones, sure there is one with an orange Derby on the cover!
