This is why I drive slowly and defensively in my 20-yr old car. You never know when it's going to be you. Would you believe I had a car full of teenagers giving me abuse and hand signals the other day just for doing 55 on the motorway? I had no more petrol money and I was early for work. So what if I don't do the limit all the time? Tossers. Hope your insurance sorts you out, op. Important lesson for hot-headed young drivers. They are speed limits. Not targets.Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery, and top marks to Fiat for making one tough little car.

Fook me, thats pretty scary.
Thats a reminder to everyone, not just the 'hot headded' ones. I don't think many cars on here would cope that well.

the traffic police that came later to the hospital said the had told BEAR ( the highway agency) to get on to sorting the river that was running across the road, why do they have to wait till something happens?

I am very glad to hear that the injuries are not bad and hoping a speedy recovery is on the cards.
These new Fiats are cracking cars and agree with your warning to all as we all get a bit over enthusaistic sometimes.

So many times I "play" on the twisty bits in my Skodas because it's such fun. I've ended up in a few ditches, but I've not been hurt.....YET. I really need to slow down, but as a lot of us car driving enthusiasts on here know twisty roads are just too tempting. Seeing this reinforces what I already knew....that the fun can all too quickly turn into something so much worse. I wasn't suggesting that your wife was driving fast BTW.
Best wishes to your wife, glad she's not as bad as she could have been.

Been to one too many bad accidents over the years. Just remember that speed (and stupidity) does kill. Also expect the unexpected ! Glad the missus is Ok.

I still don't go daft in the wet very often, too many things that can easily go wrong. Matt

Glad to hear your wife is doing okay!
I've always scoffed at modern safety equipment (crumple zones, airbags and the like), but it looks very much like they saved her life in this case. Easy to see why you want another Panda.

Glad SWMBO's ok!! Pass on our regards won't you?!?! Tell you what though, the roads around here are treacherous at times when it's raining. When I was commuting to Glasgow a wee while ago I dreaded heavy rain because the road surface is so worn, the water sits in the tramlines. The car I was driving had 265 tyres on the back and it was very hard work at times stopping the tail from shimmying. The worst bit IMO was the hard right bend after the exit off the M80 on to the M876 for the Kincardine Bridge. Had the car trying to make bids for freedom on a few occassions. Reminds me, must check the wife's tyres. (Well, she won't!! )

have to say we are both touched with what has been said,i have been showing her this thread and it does bring a tear to the eye.
alltorque just to let you know it was a grande punto, but with the state of it you might not have guessed!
i do 50 k miles a year, and guess who has slowed right down on the roads now.
gonna investigate that road section,as i think the road has not been maintained well, and battle comences with the insurance co.
cheers scott

Its scary as hell, glad she made it though that 'Hammondesque' accident. I'm trying to communicate with GF what happens when you lose control, she 'knows' but never had the car on its limit in the passenger seat I'm always pressing the imaginary brake pedal! she's learnt naughtyness from me! don't want her to learn the hard way, then theres a lot of scary weather that can really throw a curve ball, nowt you can do to prevent that sometimes. Glad the Fiat gave its life for your wifes.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Jeez. Sobering stuff.
Remember when my wife and I were barrelling up the M6 on a wet day in the Mini. We both darned near needed new pants after we hit a big patch of standing water and the car started aquaplaning. The revs just shot up - front wheels no longer in contact with the ground! Soon back in control - sometimes you just get lucky.
