You know how it is when you drive a car every day - small faults slowly get worse and worse, and it takes someone who doesn't drive it often to spot them.
I've been out in the Mini recently, I hardly go near it normally. The front discs are warped - when you lightly brake there's a definite wobble, you can feel it through the steering and brake pedal.
I was out in it yesterday, and had to do a fairly sharp stop - some fool in a merc decided to stop from 65+ to a standstill to pick his mate up walking along the pavement, causing a near pile-up - and ever since then, light braking has been accompanied by a loud (in the car anyway) knocking/clonking in time with the wheel rotation. The discs feel a bit more juddery too.
If I brake heavily, there's no noise. But when I come to a stop and lift off the brake pedal, there's a clonk. If I roll at 5mph, hit the brakes hard to suddenly stop, again there's a clonk when I lift off.
My theory: Under light braking, the wobbling of the warped disc (it seems to only be the O/S) is knocking the pads around, if I brake hard, the extra force keeps them against the disc.
Sound plausible?
It's absolutely tipping it down outside so I don't fancy having a look!

Sounds completely plausable.
It could also be the wheel bearing(s) - my 1275GT had a warped disc for about a year and after a while the wheel bearing started to make strange noises. It sounded pretty much like the disc / pad, but until I wound down the window while my mate was driving I hadn't noticed it was the bearing.
The other thing to check is the spring plate and split pins that hold the pads in the caliper. A broken plate could mean that the pads are wobbling inside the calliper - a broken split pin can have the same effect.
If I was you I'd spend a day and replace both discs (which you should do anyway, never just replace one at a time), both bearings (which you'll have to do anyway), new spring plates / split pins, overhaul the callipers (including new seals and possible pistons) and new pads. It should only cost you around £150 if you bought bulk std brake pads.

Yeah... The discs look pretty scored so it'll need new discs. I think there's a set in the garage somewhere, must have a look!

Yeah, the later 12" wheels - it's an '89 Mini 30. I've got a complete set of old Cooper 'S' driveshafts/ hubs/calipers/pads/discs too, from my old 10" wheeled Min. Must dig 'em out and flog 'em...

It'll probably only take you another hour on top of the time you'd spend replacing the discs / bearings.........

Hah hah! They cost me a fortune, that was ten years ago!
Been out and looked under the Min, I think the fact that the CV boot is hanging off and the joint looks quite dry won't be helping matters! Oddly it doesn't clonk on full lock though...

Update...
It's my mam's car and she took it to her mate who runs a garage this morning to be looked at. He got it up on the ramps and found a big CRACK IN THE FLOORPAN! Err, so that'll be the knocking then! Hopefully it can be welded up ASAP...

Happened to me on two of my Minis...
