Alright chaps,
My Norton (2003) subsription is about to expire and was wondering what you all use or can recommend. I've also been using zone alarm ( free edition ) firewall as well which seems pretty good.
So any recommendations are welcome along with any to steer clear of.
As always thanks in advance, and looking forward to catching up with you all at RCS.

Humm right I get asked this question at work all the time and in most cases the answer is why are you needing a firewall, Unless your IP is static (most BB usually aint) you should not need the firewall, also have you got improtant info on your machine like Bank details if so then yer have the firewall.
The only reason why is a hacker would only target a machine they know has alot of info on that they can use aginst someone, Viruses Can be blocked by your firewall of course but I would not count on that being too good.
I am a Systems security Engineer and I am trained in the methods to gain access to a system Windows or Unix based, and I don't use any form of firewall due to the fact that 1. My IP is not Static 2. there is one in a million chance if not more that you will get an intruder.
Also if your Zone alarm keeps oing off about a Probe or Scan in most cases 99% its your ISP checking that your not up to anything you should not be like hacking
Any free Firewalls are ok but as the saying goes you get what you pay for and most users just install the fairwall not configure it.
Antivirus mate just get one and try it if its free otherwise buy something like Norton, Etrust, etc etc
If you do keep the zone alarm on Message me or talk at RCS to what to lock down so your system is tighter than a NUNs Croutch (so to speak)

Conversely, I'd advise the use of a firewall irrespective of static or dynamic IP addressing. The possibility of your PC being recruited into a BotNet or FXP dump is very real. But as mentioned above, configure the firewall correctly or you may as well not have it. AVG Free is pretty good as far as FREE AV software goes. Also hop across to www.microsoft.com and get the antispyware beta. No matter what your opinion of MS, the AS software is just rebranded Giant AS at the moment...One of the best available. *n

I've been using ZoneAlarm on top of my static IP and it's already blocked 80 + things trying to access my machine.
I use it at home both on my LP and desktop, and as long as it's configured correctly everyhting is perfick.

Thanks for the advice gents, Well I've gone for the all in one package with Etrust. Well priced and seems to be working well. Its scanning now and has picked and deleted two infections that Norton didn't even advise me about !.
