.....and what's the gaff with all the buyers guides stating that you can't rev the autos in park, as it blows the clutch packs? Any truth in that or is it just hand-me-down stuff? Seems weird!
Have a buyer's guide somewhere around here.......

Front wings are £400 each side!!!
They are based on the E28 5 series runnign gear (or vice versa) mechanical parts are easy to get.
M635csi FTW (M5 engine)
best to buy a good one and have spare car knocking around for parts.
I know a chap in Verwood Dorset who restores them (and regulary wins concours type events) I believe he is also the 6 series club chairman?
Lovely cars but a bit thirty for me now (3.5 engine with auto box good for about 25mpg at best)
I would like one in Zinnobar red with black leather and manual gearbox - but try finding one!!

They basically rot all over from the ones i've seen,. Mechanically a 5 or 7 series will donate any oily bits you need.
I remember having a drive of an M6 version, a magnificent car.

Front wings are £400 each side!!! Hmm... well at least they're still available! Genuine Merc wings for my car are about that price (although I'm a cheapskate and got pattern ones for much less!) They do look like they rot everywhere. But they look so damn HARD!

They rot everywhere, autos don't feel that quick esp 2.8's which feel actually quite slow, manuals much better especially with the dog leg box, mmmmm
Most have been abused by the wrongtype of owner over the years there's very few good ones left I spent ages looking for a niceish one with a budget of £2500, this is no where near enough, anything less than 3k will be probably be a money pit to keep in good shape.
The chrome bumpers and other trim pieces are hugely expensive and often manky I found, and unless the car has recently had a set a set of dampers and bushes they drive like wallowy old custard, this I found when I drove one that had just been treated to full suspension overhaul and slight upgrade, it really showed how good they could be and how bad most were..
watch out for metric wheels as well as these still show up with them fitted and they cost uber bucks to get tyres for.
the general consensus amongst the owners I spoke to was spend proper money and buy a great car with impeccable history and you will love it, buy a dog or something thats been badly maintained and you will live to regret it and cry everytime someone says BMW.
These are not 'budget runner' cars that can be run on a shoe string think of them like a 911 (which they cost more than new) and your on the right track

right. shadowline is basically black trim option, highline only. highlines are the last of them that had e34 type headlights (edit as they are 6 only and unavailable. look like e34 smileys tho) and later EFI. wings are expensive-fritz bits do GRP ones for about £250. front valnces and rear ones are unobtainium. they rot everywhere, particularly wings, sunroofs, front jacking points, drip rails and rear inner sills (PITA) and thats the easy bits. they're karmann built and rot like it too. they not all e28 based. the first upto about 82ish are based on e12's. the very lowly ones are 630 carbs, but they are porbably all dead now. all four of them. 633, 635 were e12 based as are some early 628s. there are three models of 6- ones that have long side bumpers, ones that have rubber gaiters in the side bumpers and highlines which are 'kitted. they drive really nicely, everything feels old and tactile (clunky).
and in answer to lewis- I've never blown an autobox up in a six, they use the 4hp22 box in most of them (unless you get a 3 speed and they're thermonuclear proof!) same as many e30's, e28's, e34's, e32's etc. rev the fanny off them in any position and they don't really care. run them low on fluid of sit them in 'd' while not moving for too long and they don't like you from that point on.
I'm really not fascinated by six series. they're too nice straight away and there's very little you can do to them to make them look better. big BBS splits and some stick and thats it.

Nice one Edd, I was hoping you'd see the thread and shed some light on them! Looks like they're a bit out of my price range - last thing I need is another project! Still, they're nice to look at! ;D

A bit 'German' for me. Exceedingly capable with the right engine, completely ruthless in efficiency. But a bit dull.
I guess no-one likes the class swot! If the beemer was a schoolkid, it really would bring teacher an apple.
I do like the looks though. Such a huge glass area!

Dave (aka v8devon) used to have an '81 manual 635 back in the early 90's when they were still banger money (I think he gave £800 and a knackered TR7 for his), it stood up to all sorts of abuse (the only car I've ever mooned out of at 140mph ) and was a fantastic car to drive. 28mpg on a run too from the 5-speeder.
