When I was a lad, my mum had a Rover 216 Vitesse in British Racing Green for a little while. It looked exactly like this one. ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/DBevis/g550nko.jpg) It was brilliant. I loved the way the boot would spring open while you were driving back from the supermarket, emiting a noise not unlike a wounded elephant and ejecting the groceries into the path of the surprised motorists behind. It was registered G550 NKO - I'm sure it'll be long dead by now. Anyway, in a flash of nostalgia I decided to see what they were going for these days... and there just aren't any left. Aside from this minter, eBay is bereft. LinkyCurious. They must have all died. Here, have some googlings. Anyone got any to add...? ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/DBevis/216_2.jpg) "It's pronounced 'Boo-kay...'" ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/DBevis/216_1.jpg) ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/DBevis/216_3.jpg) ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/DBevis/216_4.png) Lovely official shot. Hit with stick! Hit with stick! ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/DBevis/216_5.jpg) ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/DBevis/216_6.jpg) ![](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/DBevis/216_7.jpg)

A DVLA check reveals the following about your mum's old 216:
The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for G550 NKO are:
Date of Liability 01 09 2002 Date of First Registration 01 08 1989 Year of Manufacture 1989 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1598CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour GREEN Vehicle Type Approval null The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry. Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle 6 Months Rate ÂŁ101.75 12 Months Rate ÂŁ185.00
So, it hasn't been used since 2002 but the DVLA have never been advised that it's been scrapped - could be rusting away in a field somewhere waiting for you to rescue it . . .

they were shockingly bad. People bought better cars. They got scrapped.
I owned a new-ish one in like 1991. I sold it after 4 or 5 months. it sucked. And they rusted like you would not believe. The metal was also that special stuff that fizzes to nothign when you strike an arc on it so they were almost unweldable. And the parts were insanely expensive. Mine needed a back box. ÂŁ185 +VAT. for a back box. In 1991. And there were no 3rd party alternatives. Eveywhere I rang was Rover part only.
Oh, and mine was a 213 and it drove like the most shocking load of manure eVaH.
So now I'm all nostalgic about the horrible POS, and when I see one of the rare surviviors I think "wow, a 213!" and hats off to anyone who takes one on and makes it good.
But for the average bread & butter motorist there were better cars, cheaper and easier to keep on the road.
thats where they all went

Here's our man Slater's, still in 'Bucket Blue', though am I right in thinking it's a 213 rather than a 216? ![](http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3217/2771313226_d614240302.jpg) From memory the 213 had the Honda lump whereas the 216 was saddled with Rover's S-Series. General consensus of opinon is that while the Honda engine was a gem and the cars in general were extremely refined (making them prime OAP-fodder), indifferent build quality, rubbish handling and that oh-so-80's 'styling' mean that today they are remembered with even less affection than the Maestro/Montego they were supposed to replace. ![](http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3133/2906572573_19b55d4365.jpg) Prime Retro-Rides material then! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

Indeed the 213 was a Honda lump and "the one to have" at the time. If you wanted a complete absence of performance that was certainly the one to have. Perhaps just as well considering the excessivly rolly-pollyhandling and probably were on 145r13 tyres.... Slam it to within an inch of its life should stop the rollypolly!

Weren't the sills particularly rust-prone?

sills, doors, window frames, wheel arches, they just disolved. Mine was 5 or 6 years old and just spontaneously started breaking out with rot all over in odd places.
My neighbour at the old house had a later model (about a G reg one) and that was no where near as bad, so maybe just the earlier cars really suffered. Apparently they sorted the drivability out to a greater or lesser extent on the later ones / Vitesse / something.
They have to be high on the tat-o-meter though for thier once common but now obscure status, giffer owners, mixed herritage, UK specific vehicle. And now with rose tinted glasses, all those "faults" become "character"

Holy curse word designed to replace the Maestro/Montego, no way I think it was supposed to replace the Triumph Acclaim, and be produced alongside the Maestro/Montego as a more upmarket (!) alternative.

used to get quite a few in the paintshop for repairs the underside rotted due to the very poor quality stone chip guard they had this used to crack and then hold water up against the body hence the bottom 6" of the entire car would dissolve all the range of Austin rover of that era did it kind of build it Friday scrap it Monday

I don't often say this about old cars, but those really are/were awful!! They were (and are if you still see them) always driven by those over 65. At least the Honda version (was it a Ballade?) didn't suffer from having a Rover badge attached to it. For once Rust will be doing us a favour when it destorys them!

Surely they aren't that bad - all the older Hondas (albeit late '80s)I've driven have been great.

The Honda Ballade was a much better built car by virtue of being built a) in Japan b) by the folk who designed it c) by people that gave a toss about what they did at work
Just so happens that my mate has a 12.7 mile 213 on his drive at the moment which is shortly off to a museum. Another mate who's a (reputable) hiab owner took a call off some folk to come and take away a scrap car from their recently deceased fathers garage. On arriving he opens the garage, removes the blanket, discovers a brand new '87 213. Says to the owners "I'm not gonna scrap this, it's too good, would you have any objections to me selling it on?" they reply that as long as it's gone they don't care! Turns out the father had bought it new back in '87, driven it once, decided that if he carried on driving it that he'd ruin it, put it in the garage, put a blanket over it and there it sat until a month ago! (I will get over there in daylight and get some pics before it goes)
