Hello one and all, time for another technical query [what’s that I can hear…a collective groan?]
Like all of the greatest plans the conception was exquisite. We had the tools. We even had the technology. Unfortunately for those now reading this what we didn’t have was the foresight to take any before photos, label any parts or note where any of the pipes went before having to down tools unexpectedly and return home for a bit of a family emergency.
So a fortnights gone by and I come back to finish off the head, re-gasket and seal everything up, fit the electronic ignition and re fit the refurbed inlet manifold and carburettor. In the process of stripping everything down there’s been an intensive clean up and everythings gone back on by the book. However I’ve got a couple of issues currently stopping me finishing the overhaul and I can’t get back out onto the blacktop till I’ve cracked it. So there’s the situation, now for the questions.
This is the new manifold. There’s a cast pipe to the rights [looking from the front of the car to the back] that seems to take water. There’s also a screw in on this side that I’ve t-pieced with one receiving the pipe from the oil filler [to burn off excess oil fumes], the other connected to the servo [labelled on the photo] I guess that these are ok? There’s no screw in option on the left hand side of this new manifold but there was one on the manifold that came off. Do I need it, what does it do and am I screwed without it?!
The Oil Filler has three take offs. The top one joins to the underside of the air filter housing with a pipe. I’ve joined the second one [going from top to bottom] to the previously mentioned t piece to vent excess oil fumes. Correct? Now I seem to think that the bottom one should take air to the crankcase but where can I take it too and with what connection as I don’t seem to have any piping to do the job. Do I need to run a hose off of this or can I just leave it as is [all labelled on the photo]
This is the cleaned up carb. Looks better than it did! I’ve got what I assume is the fuel inlet pipe connection [see photo]. I’ve also got the distributor vacuum pipe and a fuel vent pipe. I’m assuming due to the locations on the carb, and the inflexibility of the pipe that on this photo a is the distributor vacuum and b the fuel vent pipe [just needs to be tucked away somewhere]? I’ve got a non vac electronic distributor kit on though so am I going to need to run a distributor vacuum pipe or can I just tape it out of the way.
And if anyone is observant enough to notice that the Bestek starter coil is mounted upside down and seemingly without an amplifier, the amplifier now comes with the coil on an L shaped bracket that makes mounting and access a doddle…as long as you check the bonnet shut clearance and mount it the rightway up first time! Be nice to get everything together now so I can try out the claimed increase in fuel efficiency and cold start up.
So there’s some things to keep you busy with and hopefully there’ll be some out there with photos, words or even a bit of both that can point me in the right direction. Oh, and after months of threatening it, I’ve started a readers thread so prepare to be relatively underwhelmed with a lack of updates on that front!
Cheers guys
