my rocco (1.8 DX motor) has always been a bit of a smoker.... usually when cruising along at a lazy speed, if you pull up somewhere and then blip the throttle it'l give out a little puff of blue smoke andthen clear up. just recently though, it's been really bad - lots of smoke and it just keeps pluthering out even at idle. still only really does it when it's been driven 2000-2500rpm for quite a while, sort of cruising in traffic, then let it idle for a bit though. to make matters more confusing, i ragged it up the motorway last night, 70 miles total at (cough cough) mph, and it's a lot less smokey today, possibly even less than when i bought it! i've heard smoke on these engines can becaused by exhaust valves wearing, or seals or summat..... the oil doesn't smell petrolly so i'm hoping it's not rings. anyone have an idea? easily fixable? i have a week off work soon when i can take my car off the road you see

Valve stem oil seals? I seem to remember that they're a common problem on DX lumps, but I can never remember whether it's those or the piston rings that are shot when smoke comes out under acceleration

naaah accelerating ain't a problem.... that's when there's no smoke, it's when i lift off or just blip the throttle quickly.
the valve stem oil seals.... DIY or new head time?

Valve stem seals then - when you lift off the vacuum sucks oil back down the valves into the combustion chamber.
No idea about on the DX, I did them on my Mini years ago and they were straightforward enough! Haynes book of Lies should have the answers... Shouldn't think it'd be too difficult once the head's off...

Breathers first before you go pulling heads Pull the rocker cover off, turn it upside down on the floor outside, pour petrol in it and set light to it. Best done at night Let it go out and cool down, then tap it along the top surface..... all the cacked on curse word thats blocking the breather will have carbonised and will just fall out Repeat with more petrol to make sure. There is also a block breather that gets really badly clogged, but its easy enough to replace. That will help enormously Cheers Dom

There is a bit of a write up on the above procedure (and why it's necessary) on the No-rice forum if you need it. Might take a bit of searching though.
