Well after a summer of epic fails with little work been closed out on the car(s), I'm looking at the fleet with regards to making the best out of what's here to suit my needs and come to the decision that whilst the hearse is in pieces I might as well swap the engine over the winter now as lash it up and run it with the V6 until the rotina is completed(know I'm making a rod for my own back with too many in progress projects etc.). So my decision, since I fancy using the hearse to tour europe and possible russia/asia is to go diesel, so question is thus what options are there is high capacity diesels that aren't complex electronically. I'm thinking along these lines thus far:- Land Rover 200Tdi(with modified LT77/sherpa box) Iveco 2.8 variants(not sure how coarse these might be in a car) Mitsubishi 2.8Td(Pajero etc but not sure about 2wd box) Any thoughts and other options out there(don't really fancy the BMW six unit on account of electronics for this project) Cheers!

Nissan RD28T six-pot turbodiesel out of a late 80's/early 90's Patrol. Old enough to be free of the worst of modern technology. 130bhp, 200 torques. I had one in my last Range-Rover, pulled like a train and did 35mpg

My mate's got a Landy with an RD28T in it out of a patrol. Quite a simple engine with loads of spares (think Taxi), bullet proof reliability and pretty good performance as well. Certainly shifts his 90 pretty well!

Avoid the VM engines like the plague, they have 4 separate heads which is ok for a boat which is what they are originaly designed for but other than that they are curse word.A 200tdi landy engine is good but is designed for 4X4 type of driving loads of low down torque at 1200 rpm but run out of puff at higher speeds.Get a taxi tuned nissan diesel as has already been said they are bullet proof.

my dads diseasel scorp did over 300,000 miles with no major engine trouble, did sound like a cop car was behind you all the time though cos of the turbo whistle, wiring behind the dash caught fire in the end and finished it off, he's reluctant to fix anything over that milage if it breaks..

I've had a Rover 825D and Scorpio with the same engine. No problems with the engines at all. The Rover dumped all its coolant and overheated due to a rad failure, but the engine was still fine after that.

The Nissan lumps in TX4 Fairways are non-turbo 2.7s, probably the same basic lump as Terranos? They are OK, but by the sounds of things 'ironmighty' wants something a bit perkier.

Thanks guys, hadn't thought of the sprinter unit(bit modern whats the deal electronics wise with them?).
Not a fan of the VM, had a scorpio one and it was a dog(but think engine was on way out when I got it). absolutely gutless and couldn't climb hill, and combined with having seen many a knackered version out of Range Rovers means I'm a bit wary of the unit.
Nissan Patrol sounds interesting, but know if I picked up one I'd probably just keep the whole car! Some food for thought here, might look at the Isuzu units found in some 4x4 as well though!Decisions, decisions! Maybe something toyota out there as well

Just stublesd across this post. I've often had the same idea of fitting a big diesel in a car. But rather than use a car or van diesel, surely a truck diesel would be more fun.!!!!! There's a commercial breakers not to far from me called Furbers, its like being a boy in a sweet shop, some of the engines are ginormous, physically and displacement wise. You's have enough torque to tow your house too, which everyone needs!!!! However could make the car a little nose heavy, some truck engines must be around the half ton mark??

Would the 2.2 xud engine out of a 406 be too small? [PEDANT] 2.1 :-) [PEDANT] very nice engine too, nice and smooth and great for crusing. Mine could do with the particulate filter cleaning out as it really doeesnt like revving (presume thats what is causing it anyway) above about 3500, but it doesnt really need to anyway.

I'm sure that the 7.2 litre turbo V8 diesel a friend has recently put in his F150 was rated at 600kgs! i know he used a mini digger to lift it into the bay! oh yes, and with stack pipes with no silencers it sounds evil! Pity it has destroyed the gearbox and is now blue smoking badly from one bank :-(
