Hi All, I'm in the process of picking up bits and pieces to convert my Mk2 16v Golf GTI to 2 litre power using an Audi 6a engine (from Audi 80 sport). I have the engine now and a lower mileage gearbox is on the way, new clutch and mounts to follow My question is, is it worth painting the block before I install it? At the mo it's the usual rustyish colour and I thought it'd look tidy painted. Anyone got any pics or tips for suitable paint and colours? Should I just leave it 'cos it'll only get covered in oil anyway...? Darren - doesn't the Mk1 have a nice painted 16v block? What colour is it, red? Cheers Stu

If you do paint it, don't use the paint straight from the tin - thin it down with quality thinners and apply lots of thin coats. This way the paiont is less likely to bubble and flake off when the engine gets hot.
Most people go down the red route - maybe try something a little different.....

Yeah Stu, it's red on mine. I painted the engine on my old Mini with some Dulux bright blue gloss - regular household paint. This was years ago, and I've got a picture somewhere of me looking very proud of myself with the gleaming engine on a hoist ready to go in. It lasted really well, showed up oil leaks a treat, but the engine threw a rod about three months later There's still some of the paint drips on the floor in our garage, it must've been near ten years ago now! It didn't blister or anything, the colour went a bit "off" with the heat but it always cleaned up OK. Dunno how the conditions compare to the Golf engine bay though!

Yep did that with two Minis and a MGB engine block, actually find the Dulux gloss paint stays on better than most so called 'engine paints'.

I tend to use ‘early learning centre’ poster paint, just in case I get any in my eyes while painting.

Yeah but to be honest it struggles on the inside of sump pans, rocker covers etc.

When I built an engine for the Rocco had it chemically cleaned, then left it unpainted... wanted a rusty rat-look block is my excuse

I've got some of the black engine paint from frost, It's not cheep but really lasts and goes a long way, plus it has a nice factory look without being too shiney. The chevy orange would look good on the right car. www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8765

I chucked some matt black engine paint on my V8 block. Goes on OK, but I don't know how long it'll last. My bro painted his CVH block with red 2-Pack spray paint - lasts just fine!

My mate used to paint his Avenger racing engines with Dulux paint as well and had no problems. Serves you right for using Dulux - you should've used CROWN paint ;D
