whats the deal with the rear quarter window on some and not on the others? without the extra window it looks a lot nicer imo. also whats it like to drive one of them? good enough to keep up with traffic easily? Rear quarter window was phased in from the mid-Sixties I think. It's like the change in rear windows on Beetles. Bigger is better for seeing stuff but less is more when it comes to looking good! To drive, they are great fun. Screaming flat-twin engine, idiotic cornering with lairy roll angles and direct steering which is almost as good as a Mini. Mix in roll-back roof as standard, super comfy ride and ability to whip the seats out at shows and you've got a winning combo. Obviously I'm not biased... Downsides are wind noise (doors flap at motorway speeds) and the fact that 29bhp is as powerful as they got from the factory. You'd be amazed how far that power goes though. 70mph flat out cruising all day. Some ace pics in this thread! EDIT - what I will say is that the 2CV is like any old Citroen. Drive one for ten miles and you'll probably hate it. Drive it for 100 miles and you'll discover the magic.

2CV's have the same problem as Pops and Beetles. When you remove the front wings it ruins the proportions. Still hundreds of really cool ones though.

Hello! First post!! Excellent thread - I'm mildly obsessed with making this: What I want to know is that - lowering a 2cv with the tie rods will ruin castor angle and make for very heavy steering. How can I get round this? I guess 2cv racers may know? Cheers Tom

As for the questions about lowering them making the steering heavy, you cut the end of the front arm off, and turn it through about 5mm then reweld, adding a bit of camber aswell if you like, easy to do, or if you have any arms, I can recommend a few places (the racers are all done this way) or do it for you myself.

very tempted, are the engines very tuneable fitting anything bigger in the front would be a lot of hard work. although I think I can live with 70 flat out Engines are pretty tunable, yeh. 9.0:1 pistons & barrels instead on the weak 7.5:1 make a huge (in relative terms) difference. Only 135 quid or so from one of the many 2cv suppliers. Lightened flywheels, race prepped heads, different exhausts etc it's all available & reasonably priced. should be able to get a 602/610cc speed up to 90+ with a bit of effort. There are adaptor plates available so you can wang in a BMW 850 twin or a Moto Guzzi! This guy's a bit of a 2cv hero, he can hook you up with all the trick parts to make your dustbin fly: www.geoff-archer.co.uk/speedshop.htm

Engines are tuneable to a certain extent, modified heads are readily available, lightened flywheels, cams, even fuel injection if you have the cash, as for 70mph flat out? thats bullwarks, that is, I bought my girlfriend a 2cv for her birthday, the engine sounds a bit rough, almost like a broken ring, it sat with the speedo as it was in the pic below for about 5 mins until I encountered a hill, when it dropped back to 70. They are not as slow as you think, driving them hard does no damage at all as long as they are serviced properly (oil and filter every 3000-6000 miles), and by 'hard' Ive held them flat out wide open throttle for at least 15 minutes, if not more on motorways, a NORMAL up change in a 2cv is done on the redline. They are very civilised in traffic, and if you can put up with trivial stuff like occasional leaks and doors peeling open at the tops above 80mph, they are totally useable everyday cars, get one with a galv chassis, doesnt matter how ropey it looks, as long as it'll pass an MoT and the engine is sound (good used engines go between £20 and £100 depending on whos selling them and how cheeky they are) and it'll go forever, and cost nothing (A full service kit, including everything you can possibly service bar oil and grease is £17). 2cv with a slightly suspect engine, on the flat: sorry about the shaky pic, the needle is on the stop, the last number on there is the 70, to the right of the speedo.. in this tatty car (£600) And yeah, the club aspect of it, especially abroad, is a riot. People shouldn't be put off by the hype, I'll only accept the opinion that '2cvs are curse word' by people that have driven them long enough to know, and usually once they have, they don't think they are curse word anymore..

Russ - I stated 70 after being very disappointed when I tested my 2CV against a sat-nav. That said, mine has done 163,000 miles now (with much thrashing) and it's getting a bit tired - I may have lost a horse or two, which makes a huge difference when you've only got 29 to start with!

Ah, H van. Now that was slow! Made my 2CV seem very nippy. Jeep-esque in performance terms was the ol' H van...

Those DS roofs arent metal flake, they are fibreglass, and that sort of crazed finish is the norm IIRC, the local group are called the Kentish Hoppers, and meet at a pub in Wingham once a month, they are a little 'mature' for my tastes, but depends what you like really! This looks to be the best I can do for their website.. www.kentishhoppers.org.uk/(that van was last seen in London, the guy was asking £2500 for it!
