Hi everyone, we have seen a 1974 Ford Transit van for sale for the business and I was just wondering what to look for (rust etc). The rear arches are a bit crusty, the bonnet looks like its been sprayed in the rain by a blind man, and the carpenter who had it (from new I must add) has put a padlock on the rear doors so the doors are very crusty now, but overall the van looks good for the £800 price tag Over the years its been upgraded to keep up with the modern stuff (think its a later transit 2.5D engine), and the seats are out of a 1994 transit. Its got mot until May 09, and tax until December 08 all this depends on selling this though www.retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=FSW&action=display&thread=46456and my fiorino which I am going to miss (mainly for the turbo ) So any advice would be great

well we have had the magnet out, and tried most of the bodywork, and its only the rear arches that the magnet didnt stick to (oh, and around the grill and headights too) It looks like this, but just plain red (light red, dark red, faded red, pinky red, etc ;D) edit - who needs Photoshop, when you have Microsoft Paint ;D

OK! The rust is pretty normal, you also need to look at the steps. Assuming it's a LWB, the wheel arches bolt off, and are the same as the Mk2. So does the grille and the headlamp surrounds, they come up on ebay often. The rust inder the headlamps could mean you need new wings, and they are not cheap, expect to pay around £300 for a pair, and the passenger side is the hardest to get hold of. One thing though, the van pictured (I know it's not the on you are after) is a petrol V4, or at least the grille is, so if it's had a DI fitted it should either be a bull nose or have had some serious firewall mods. BTW my mate has a load of Mk1 spares for sale, he's in Durham, including a pair of second hand wings.

Here's a wheel arch on ebay now, ignore the bit about it fitting either side, they are handed. is it closed?there are a surprising amount of people from sheffield on here, but theres also few from surrounding areas.will have to get a thread going to sort something out. I am from Sheffield! But live in London now.

i like the thinking behind this, chris. i'd be well impressed if i called a plumber and he turned up in a mk1 lwb tranny, with some '70s style sign writing down the side. think dave oldbus' mate miguels, but taps instead of spanners. a guy i know used to have a mk1 lwb mini bus with a 2.5 DI in it and his had the bull nose, which i actually prefer over the flat front.

I love these old vans, my dad used one at his old work, i also would be well impressed if you turned up in that to fix a leaky tap, a lot more so than in a berlingo or similar.

looks like its a bullnose then, as I was wondering why the grill looked smaller and further out on the one for sale, just thought it was my eyes playing tricks on me ;D. when I first saw it for sale, I thought it was a Bedford CF or CA because of that small grill. take off all the chrome bits, add some rust, and this would look similar (yeah right )... whoops, thats a large picture isnt it, sorry everyone, but only picture i could find

That's Ollie with De Devil a couple of years ago. So is the one you have in mind a LWB or SWB. The one you posted was a LWB and the one Ollie's got is a SWB.

You can get bigger lumps in without using the bullnose (i prefer the flat front) by chopping back into the bulkhead, gets complicated with V engines though cos the pedals get in the way, fit an auto or mid mount something if you wanna keep the flat front.

There's a local builder that uses a mint MK1 chassis cab. Looks so much cooler than something more modern.

Our Mk1 was a V4 flat front with a badly done inline six conversion between the fron seats. We fitted a bullnose to it and got a bit of cabin space back along with a whole stack of other mods, and more are planned ( in fact it is in the latest PPC mag....readers cars) Transits are fun. Being a '74 it would have the later top hinged pedals, not teh horrible ones that go through the floor and require a contortionist to remove the master cylinder...... Check the kingpins for wear, They handle really badly if the kingys are gone, so grease'em up well!
