I have been scouring the web for decent looking Montego's but cannot find a lot... The problem appears to be that no one has done a good one in the last few years and the ones that we do see are sparse on details and the images are poo. I have found a few out there but they are all quite old and I don't think that anyone has got the styling *quite* right yet. For example: and This cannot be the case surely? Does anyone know of any good ones out there? Or even have some decent res images that I can shop? A quick learner photoshop of one on some big J-Rims that I really like the look of: C'mon people, feel the eighties love! Rysz.

That last 'look' would be easily do-able using he wheels from a last-of-the-line MG TF
Amazing these cars don't have more of a 'following' as he Turbo's are obscenely quick (and TEH ULTIMATEZ TORQUE-STEERZ). And you are right not seen many (any) nicely modded ones. Is this because of (a) obscure-ish stud pattern (b) unfashionable wheel drive (c) grandad image (d) all the above or (e) something else?
(Not very) interestingly I was about to start a thread re. "Why don't we see any decent modded Marina's"....

Its a BL/ Austin Rover product. They have never been cool, apart from in an ironic way!
I'm not sure if many peformance parts are available either.

My thinking was that a T16 lump is *relatively* easy to slot in, and this is found in a Rover 600 - also in a Rover 600, a Honda vtec lump from a prelude will go in - ergo vtec Montego? Both of which are tuneable engines, just brakes and suspension to deal with then... IIRC, GAZ will do custom coilovers, and the MGF calipers/disks will go on there, I suppose you could also get adaptors for the wheels... Rysz.

From a local car show, yesterday: No end of 'wrongness' going on with that one. Should be so straightforward to make a kick-ass Montego, dished 15in 5-spokes from an early MGF, stick whack, de-clutter and the gangs' all there. Seems to be another of those cars that folk only try to 'improve' by sticking unneccessary stuff ON.

Yeah but look at those rear arches......... RESPECTORZ!
I wouldnt mind an estate actually... much of the wibblepoo image has gone (not that it should matter) Big loadall capacity, and dare I say it, not bad to look at.

I think that as with a lot of BL stuff, they attract more than their fair share of oddballs... a kind of "Flat-capper" which is slightly different from the MGB brigade, but genetically similar. And these people always seem to have some strange ideas of what looks good... ;D
They are a really good car I think, and if they were built by anyone other than British Leyland, they would have a better image, and probably have lasted a bit longer too! ;D

From a local car show, yesterday: RS Cosworth bonnet vents? they look a little lost placed there, would perhaps look better a little lower and a bit more to the center I do like the shape of the Montego estate, it looks like it was intended as an estate unlike some estates which look like someone has just stuck an extension on the back of a hatchback

I've had four in the day.... the first was a 1.6L which tore the wheels off a 1.6 Sierra for acceleration (company car....) and in which I proved the 'wheelspin turn' as done in the advert WAS possible.... ;D Second was another 1.6 on intergalactic mileage which had a new gearbox fitted and never went wrong, swapped for.... A 2.0DL from my Dad which had its engine go pop thanks to a twonk in a 4X4 filling it up with water from a flood I was driving through - anyhow, new engine (with power steering!) fitted it was a 100mph+ car with mid 60mpg, especially when I tightened the wastegate linkage..... ;D Last one was a very early 2.0HLS I got as 'payment' from a neighbour for a job I did. repaired it, ran it for six months and sold at a profit... ;D
Biggest issue was the rear H beam suspension as the location bushes get weak and when 'pressing on' a bit, you end up with rear wheel steering.... which is interesting when you're not ready for it! Real killer though is RUST, they were almost built rusty, which is a pity as if they'd had a blue oval on the front they'd have sold shedloads (usual reaction I got from non-Montego owning passengers was "this thing shifts, dunnit")

I was of the same thinking, it should be easy to 'do' one! So I baught one! My plan was to drop it on some obscenely deep dished wheels from a single seater race car (which have the same PCD!) for an instant win, but unfortunately sircumstances means it's sat in a lock up gathering dust Your right though, the 'modified' Montego scene is pretty dry, and what there is is usually in really bad taste (IMHO of course). That said, I think they're an awkward car to modify. They should respond well to slamming due to their size and enourmous overhang both front and rear, but BL's ingenious floor-scraping sump torpedos a simple slamming operation. And they already have what looks like a lame bodykit baked right into the body shell, which i've never liked. And the rear quarter light sits at a different height to the rest of the windows, which looks more and more rediculous the more you look at it! On the plus side, if you find a good one and overcome all of those obstacles to make it look sweet it will be a sure fire hit at a car show, I reckon

This is the best I can find, and even then it would be a thousand times better just with paint and wheels and then left alone... Here's one for someone to do something with: Best colour as well, I reckon.

Moto-build do indeed still list Montego stuff on their website... engine goodies are mostly for the MG models such as actuators and intercoolers (and an entire new turbocharger for £690!) but they also have springs, brakes etc which should apply to lesser models.
Definately a worthwhile project car. There was a dealer-fit bodykit available, the front bumper of which looks like the one on that white estate posted previously - basically very clean, flat bumpers and a cute little spoiler. Think it also featured a cleaner grille without the bars. That works well so continue it by removing any rubbing strips (pre-facelift only?), debadge, lower and enjoy. Don't bolt tat on, don't fit extra tailpipes, don't torque-steer it into a bus shelter.

the crapest of the curse word. no place here, end of. What, Montego's? or the badly modded one's? Montego's are quite unloved (which is a shame), so I'd say they would be perfectly at home here. They need some love/good modding.
