for on Wednesday, we may all be dead Next Wednesday the Hedron Collider will be switched on, and for those who don't know what this is, its the big bang machine that will let scientists see what happened when the earth was created. Either that or the machine will create a black hole and within a millioneth of a second the earth will implode (last year the scientists miscalculated something as simple as the hole in the ground to take the machine, so it doesnt look too good for us all ;D) But please don't delete this thread as being off topic, as I am using this Hedron thingy as an excuse to go travelling all this weekend and the start of next week. If you see my dark blue Fiat panda (see below) travelling around Northumberland, Scotland, Cumbria, and Yorkshire, give a wave . The trip could end up as 1000 miles (might just pop down to Lands End ) oh, and just in case the world does implode, I am going to leave cleaning up the campervan until next Thursday EDIT - details of the (shorter) trip here... www.retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=46333

Id heard about that big machine being switched on too. I was kinda worried it was trigger a chain reaction that would result in the destruction of the universe too. When scientists first split the atom they had a hunch the same would happen then, but thankfully it didnt!
Good call on holding off the campervan till Thursday. Imagine how annoyed youd be if you did all that work and it ended up being atomised!

I think its mainly scaremongering, and I don't think they are actually trying it for real for another year - the first test is with a different particle (neutrons, not protons)
basically until a blackhole reaches a critical size, it cannot sustain itself - it is smaller than an atomic nucleus, and therefore is not to hit enough other particles in a vacuum to actually sustain itself before it extinguishes.
The blackholes event horizon also develops a field of constantly imolating matter and anti-matter particles, which act as a kind of field, and at that size, the holes gravitational pull isnt strong enough to repel this. one particle will fall into the black hole, and will have a negative mass, whilst one is fall away from the black hole with a positive mass - thus the black hole is emitting matter (although not really as its all quantum ;D) and will extinguish
I may have got some of that wrong, but I think the theory is right. I cant remember enough detail about it without reading up :-)

When scientists first split the atom they had a hunch the same would happen then, but thankfully it didnt! That was the first nuclear test - there was a theory that the energy created released (slap wrists, you cant create energy) by the critical reaction could potentially ignite the atmosphere - calculated as 1:1000's chance - they went ahead should have really been 1:1000,000's - someone cocked up an order of magnitude since been shown that its pretty much impossible - well over 3000 nuclear tests havnt done it !

So the plan is to accellerate two protons to extreme speed and make them collide? Surely using volvos would release more energy?
