If you followed my thread the other day about buying a 32 year old car on ebay without looking at it, well I went to collect it today. Car in question is a 1976 Datsun 120Y 4 door saloon in turquoise. Once very common and derided, they've become very rare (well under 100 on the road so I've been told) and all of a sudden, rather cool. So without further ado: Check out the dealer option luggage rack as well! Both of mine. Sadly I can only keep one so the MX must go The seller said is was clean and he wasn't kidding. Had it up on the ramps and the underneath is mint, having been undersealed from new. I checked everywhere on the floor, arches and boot and could not find any rust at all. The only bit is on top of the passenger wing (of which I have a replacement for.) Paintwork isn't 100% perfect, as you can see the driver's door has a poor paintmatch, even though it is the original. Overall though, it is pretty damn good for a 32 year old car. Mechanicals are spot on as well, everything has been taken care of and it made the 200 mile journey home without missing a beat. It is also staying original with only a few minor touches, a steel front plate and a discreetly mounted modern stereo are top of the list. Can't really drive around with the 1 speaker LW/MW standard radio I'm afraid. Furry dice have already gone! I've only had it since this lunchtime but I've already had 2 people asking if I'll sell it. The reaction it gets is amazing, drive down the street and people just stop in their tracks to look. It also goes very well with my best mates 1981 Corrola. All in all, I am really pleased. It cost me a mere £700 which is about £400 less than the price guides suggest. No it's not fast and it goes round corners like a shopping trolley full of logs, but who cares? You don't need mega hp to have fun.

I can't slam it - my job involves driving over some evil pot holes and speed bumps, put it in the weeds and it won't physically get over them. However a bit of lowering could well be on the cards, still got an open mind about wheels at the moment. Something small and retro of course.
I want to do a few subtle mods to improve it as daily driver. But want to keep it original at the same time as it's a rare car. Other thing is I'm off to New Zealand next year, so every penny spend now is a penny less to spend there. I was thinking of replacing the steering wheel, take of the door mirror and fit a pair in the front wings and perhaps a K&N bolt on (got to be worth another 20bhp). Another thought I had was to change the seats for something more supportive, but don't know what would fit and wouldn't look out of place?

That front wing idea sounds cool. And are you taking the car to New zealand with you? If so I'd take it around Taupo race circuit if I where you.And are you going RS Watanabe for your choice of wheels?

very very cool car there! My honest opinion- don't slam it- keep it as is aenjoy the rolly polly handling! and actually being able to drive it every where- that is such a cool car it don't need anything else to make it look cooler!!!
We had a station wagon version back in NZ when i was little- red.
Are you going to NZ to live? if so- sell it before you leave as once you land you will be amazed at the amount of cheap rust free old cars about- especially in south island (the much better island- real men and beer)

That's bloody great and a 12" wheel model too. How's that turning circle? I remember a mate having one of these when I was 15 and we used to bomb about all over the place in it. A few years later I had a coupe in the best colour too. I even got on TV with it! Ferg

If anyone happens to buy Classic Car Weekly then turn to page 57......... and yes, that is my car he contacted me a few weeks ago asking for some pictures and some info on what they're like to drive and own. The other 4 featured are the 240Z (of course), Honda S800, Toyota CROWN and mk.1 Mazda RX7. Just got some new wing mirrors so will fit these soon and get some new pictures
