one of them fell off!!!! a couple of days ago i heard a knocking noise and found that the original bolts were not long enough for the job, despite doing an impression of bolts that were! it had pulled 3 of the 5 out of the hub! anyway got home and ordered some longer bolts, that should do the trick. did it b*llocks! just coming back from it maiden voyage to tesco and more knocking and the wheel just fell off!! luckily we were 20 yards from home and pushed it back on a trolley jack! now i have to get the hub off and get it re-tapped as i'm guessing it will have burgered the threads! i can only think it wasnt seated properly and went all egg shaped and just pulled the bolts out! so now the poor merc is stranded out the back and cant go to the kit car show tomorrow

Ah good, still at least they can go back on, I've seen wheels come off motors and get all sorts of damage!

i have since found out that mercs have hub centric fitting and as the new wheels have a slightly bigger centre bore they may not have been sat right, lucky all 4 didnt go boobs up!
but you can get centre rings to take up the slack so they will be on order by the end of the day.

Shit me! Wheels falling off ain't nice - I once lost one after some kind soul liberated my bolts in the night. Did they not feel a bit "wobbly" when you put them on if they weren't centred quite right? I'd have thought you'd have got a serious amount of vibration, no?
Oh well. At least no-one got hurt and you've thought up a solution!

there are two different length bolts for Mercs, the short ones are for steel rims only, ,the longer alloy wheel bolts have a different radius behind the hex head to suit Mercs wheels, after market rims should only be bought with the bolts....that way you can "discuss " any probs with who ever you bought them off. I went to an Auction here in OZ a few years back with a mate who bought a 44 gal drum of chrome wheel bolts.all different, they were new left overs from a national Tyre retailer.when they fit up accessory rims for customers they also fitted security nuts,so there were thousands of odd bolts and nuts left over! Always use a torque wrench to do up wheel bolts on alloy wheels, tighten in a pattern with thye cars weight on the wheels, ,"every second bolt". that way they come tight evenly.go for a short drive and torque them again. Check them at least once per month and YES Merc alloys are center mounted ,Most important!.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

curse word, like everyone else has said, at least you weren't going fast, nothing worse that seeing one of your wheels overtaking you at 80mph

I once 'lost' a wheel from my S110R...some bloke pulled up, stuck it in his car and drove off!

Blimey! I had a wheel fall off my old Mini at 60mph, quite unnerving to see the wheel bounce away across a central reservation into a hay field...
Glad everything is OK!
