quick question - i know that running a smaller pulley on the charger would make it spin faster, and i know that it not just the charger pulley size but the relationship between the sizes of the crank pulley and charger pulley that dictate the gearing
but how fast can an M45 be run safely before reliability/longevity are greatly affected?

Max Charger RPM is 14,000 If you use that Excel spreadsheet from the sprintex site, it will tell you supercharger speed and pulley ratio needed. HTH Dom

i was looking at the merc supercharger with the electromagnetic clutch a while ago, the benifit being you can turn it off to tootle about going to the shops, and on the way home from the shops you can turn it on an suprise the barrys in there paxos and corsas

Superb. I think my next engine build will involve a supercharger (when I get around to finishing this one! ). That supercharger calc program looks very useful!

This is the worst case for Belt Chirp, you either run a huge belt tension which cost power and bearing life on all the other ancillaries, or you clutch it Guess which is cheaper ;D We Looked at it for the Supercharged Rangerover, just to avoid belt chirp. Would be nice to switch in and out, but very hard to do in practice, what the eaton ones do is, run a bypass for part throttle and cruise conditions, which means the Charger is pumping but it is not generating pressure, just cycling from one side to the other HtH Dom

I've got an old magazine somewhere, CCC I think, with a rally V6 Sierra in it. It ran a supercharger and the guy designed a clutch mechanism for it that used parts from a vacuum cleaner! I know that's of no help whatsoever really, but I found it interesting It'd take me most of the weekend to find too, and I'm away...

Yep I have been searching some of the mini Forums and there are quite a few like that around. I still reckon its cheaper to do it with the standard Charger pulley and change the Crank pulley.... Bearing in mind I have to fit one to drive the charger anyway... may as well fit one to give me required ratio to start with. Also, for the £120 or so they are over here, that means I would be paying more for the pulley than the charger I don't think so some how ;D

Are they available off the shelf in different diameters for diy drilling, or what?

Difficult to argue with that logic! Where will you get a pulley from? Are they available off the shelf in different diameters for diy drilling, or what? The CooperS Charger has a 6-Rib belt. these are an industry standard pitch, if you need more grip, you run more grooves or more tension. ( I was working on designing a V6 supercharged engine with the charger and all ancilleries, waterpump, AC Compressor, Pas pump and alternator all run from a single 6-rib belt ;D PITA packaging job, but we got it to work eventually) So you should be able to run any 6 rib pulley off any poly-v equipped motor, that includes all the ancillary pulleys as well. Failing that, I`ll pull a generic pulley model off the system at work, copy it and change it to suit what I need. I have a mate with a CNC Lathe so I just give him the model file and he will turn one up for me Take about 10 minutes to model one and about an hour to cut ;D

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
