Well, after much soul searching and coffers checking we realised that our beloved Mk1 Golf wasn't ever going to get the resto it needed... and Vick, my wife, needs a cool car to run every day. She's more of a petrolhead than I am!! So then we found this.... Look ordinary? Look again!!! Its a Golf Syncro... ie 4WD!!! And we managed to win the ebay auction for it... cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4554760125So look out for an auction on the 'bay soon for our small light, 1978, three door 1500 (ie big block so DEAD easy to fit a bigger engine to), chrome bumper Mk1 Golf complete with Ronal alloys, GTi springs/dampers, GTi seats and GTi brakes with loads of MOT & Tax on it... a cool Euro-look project if I ever saw one ;D Re-heeee-sult

Wow what a bargain! I missed out on buying one on eBay when I was trying to buy a Mk2. It was a really mint black one with not many miles on it. With 10 seconds to go, I had to enter a bid of £500 or more.................................................. so I entered £495. I was mildly frustrated with myself Lets us know how it goes

Good stuff! Shame you've got to let the Mk1 go though. I'll give you a grubby Volvo 340 Haynes manual and a box of assorted rusty nuts and bolts, how's that sound?

Excellent el-cheapo purchasing! Do those things have poo pierburg carbs? And is the 4-wd permanantly engaged? Such a combination could lead to a mildly unpleasant surprise re. fuel consumption!

Had a Golf syncro earlier on this year for about five months as a winter beater, it drank the fuel (25mpg) but you could totally forgive it because it cornered so well. We stuck some German and Swedish sourced lowered and uprated suspension on it and thrashed the nuts off it everywhere. The do come with the curse word pierburg carb, but I got a Weber conversion from G&S for £192 and it transformed it, well worth the money. Only got rid of it because we didn't need it anymore, at that price you can't go wrong and it looks looked after. They've got a good following and parts aren't that hard to get hold of. Enjoy it, they're great... ;D

A cool car. I’m sure the syncro carry-on wont do so much damage to the economy, it’s only a 1.8 family hatch at the end of the day. I don’t do VW’s generally but I would like to try one of them.
Pull out the engine and box and fit a rwd set-up using the 4wd’s rear diff etc!

The Mk1 has horrid paint & uses a bit of oil (stem seals). It also needs a new pair of front wings, a bonnet and a tailgate (rust) but I have the wings & bonnet that I could sell cheaply:-) It has loads of MOT & about 5 months test - its being used everyday at the mo by my wife & is totally reliable.
