cut mine on the merc the other weekend, dropped it about 2.5" hasnt had any negative affect on the ride at all, still nice and smooth.
suppose it depends on how much you want to lop off whether it becomes a nasty ride or just plain dangerous (like springs falling out of the cups etc)

Fine if you're doing it for a "look".
In the case of Rmad's Cressy (and I'm pretty sure Simon won't wholly disagree with this) it's all about the stance. Which is fine if you're car is just for cruising the mean streets looking th edog's danglies.
However I get the impression that you were doing your car for performance rather than posing.
In which case I wouldn't bother. Cut springs with the massive forces put on them through drifting etc? No thanks.
You can pick up a set of drop springs for a six-pot bimmer for £50 and a kit to do the whole lot properly (springs, bushes, shocks etc.) for under £200.
I know which way I'd go.....

It's true, mine is purely for looks. But the fact is, a set of cut springs are barely any different to 'proper' ones if they're done properly. The spring rate is in the bar that was wound to make the coil...not in the coiling process. If you chop a couple of coils off the bar carries the same rate, but in less coils - thus a stiffer spring. If you want to go racing, get yourself a set of mega-adjustable coil overs, but in reality a cut spring isn't always the poorer relative of an aftermarket or OE spring.

One cheap option to stiffen the suspension if you cut springs is to fit extra bump stops to the dampers. Ive never actually cut springs myself but on my Maestro autotest car the springs were lowered and uprated but still not stiff enough so I fitted extra bump stops all round and it really does make it a lot stiffer. But personally with a BMW uprated coils are so cheap I would just by a set and fit them.

yeh i was originally thinking of coilovers, but someone told me about an e30 drift car with cut springs, so i just wondered if cut springs could be up to it if done right.
its mainly cos some sort of wallet ferret appears to have eaten my money/i've curse word it all away somehow.
and angle grinder attacking a spring is much cheaper than coilovers.
cheers for the info dudes.

You can always chop them and buy new springs if it doesn't work out.

Noooooooooo ! never ever cut springs unless they have been designed so that you can do so (some have dead coils that can be cut) The reason being is that springs are designed for a certain load and removing a coil will not only increase the spring rate but will also increase the stress in the spring and could cause it to colapse slowly or worse break.
What car is it ? 'm sure somthing can be sorted without bodging it

theres no problem with an alternate option, just looking into cut springs on my e30. gona try track down the dude who apparently used cut springs to see how/what he did and what he thought of cut springs when he was ragging his car sideways

I'd be a bit more cautious about cutting coils off of a McPherson strut set-up as they don't normally have "dead coils" at the bottom. Then you have to have the bottoms flattened so that they sit in the cups properly and not just have the edge of the coil taking all of the stress. I did like optimusprimer did on my Merc - just lopped off a load of dead coils! Stiffer suspension but I was after stance - my Benz is never gonna corner that well so I wasn't really bothered!
