I know I've said this before but why can't people just accept that some like to own old cars. I was outside earlier this evening on the drive talking to my mate, he was cleaning his motorbike and I was playing around with my car. I had it idling and was going to adjust the idle speed as it was a little low and the geeky dad came out from next door and moaned that it was too noisy, it was idling!! Still get pointed at by the 2 old couples over the road who complain that I get the road wet when I wash my car. Still, the times when people pass and make nice comments outweighs this Rant over! Here's a nice picture to cheer me up...

I dunno my sunbeam makes more noise than anyother car on the estate - possibly not the TVR but hey cant hav it all my way, and ive yet to recive a complaint, thou i think its mostly idiots trying to justifty spending thousands on another clone car and losing most of the value in depreciation why they the complain about old cars

I've never actually had a bad comment thrown at me for my car....I had a brilliant day once when :
- Drove into town, parked up, old guy almost fell over on the pavement "I haven't seen one of those for years, bloody nice motor!"
- Got back in car, 20 year old lad walked behind me and went "seriously cool car"
- Drove to petrol station, had a chat with a bloke who had a Sprint engined TR7, got the number of the girl on the counter, then got stared at by a car full of girls whilst throbbing around the station trying to get out
- Got flashed at by several cars pulling out
- Saw another Dolly on the other side of the road and we both went to flash, cept i hit my wipers and he hit his horn!
- Someone tried to buy it from me when I got home.
Brilliant day ;D;D;D

It's just the way of the world. Our "society" automatically equates "old" with "curse word".
I have this with my boss. he mocks my "cheap old banger".
He has a 1-year old Polo diesel. Can that do 140mph? Think not. Does that corner like it's on rails? No. Does it look like pure sex? No. Has he lost £1000's in depreciation already? Hell, yeah. Is the Polo FUN? Er...No.
It's really that, deep down, they're all just jealous, as we're lifting two finger to the cycle of debt and depression associated with "new" car ownership. Society dictates they should do it so they follow like sheep. They'd maybe really be like us, but just don't have the balls to be different.

I rant about this constantly, if you look at any random page since I joined this forum, there's a 1 in 10 chance I'll be going beserk about society's view of old car owners. But for the benefit of our newer members, I'll rant again anyway!! ;D ;D ;D I get a fair bit of this, from neds who think the Imp's "a sh*ter" or a "pure banger" ("pure" is a favourite word of Glasgow/West of Scotland neds, who add it to the front of a word or sentance for seemingly no reason at all, possibly in order to sound 'cool' or something! ;D ;D), from mates with dull awful modern hatches who tell me to get "a real car" or "proper car" like their rubbishy dull load of rubbish that gets them into debt, who's value nose dives like a drunk kamikaze pilot with engine trouble, and that's ugly and soulless to drive, and from smug w*nkers in BMWs and the like at traffic lights (on those occasions I don't even give them the pleasure of a race, I just tell them to get to f*ck before I get out of the car, drag them out of the window of theirs, and kick the sh*t out of them for being so cheeky to me!! Generally they clear off pretty sharpish after that, bellowing stuff like "Alright, alright, sorry mate, it was just a bit of fun!!" ;D ;D ) As you can imagine I'm a bit fed up with people who think you're some kind of leper or social outcast because you chose to have a car that's over 5 years old, and think that you're too poor to have a new car, and must be jealous of their modern heap of plastic and unfixable electric curse word. If I wanted to I could get a loan and get into debt over some plastic rubbish with a Corsa badge, but I don't want to, I see the sense in tinkering with real pieces of engineering ( partly badge engineering in the case of the Imp!! ;D ;D Like I do in most of the sentences that leave my lips, I blame shameless bloody capitalist marketing tactics for this. We've all seen the ridiculous adverts like the one where the guy drives around in a tidy old VW, and goes to give his bird a lift, only to find her and her mate aghast, and her bawling "I'm not getting in that!" as if the motor's going to fall apart, then by the end of the advert he's got himself into debt over a soulless Golf convertible, and the bird's dead pleased and is glad to get a lift, and the neighbours are all looking out through the net curtains wishing they had a huge debt. You see stuff like that all the time, don't you? Everywhere you look someone's encouraging you to buy the latest model of this or that or else your mates will laugh at you, or to wear this or that or you'll be a social outcast, or to drive this or that or else your girlfriend'll hate you. Bullsh*t! Any mate or girlfriend who doesn't like you because you're not a fashionable drone who has no opinion or point of view of your own isn't worth having, and why change yourself for someone like that!?

I love driving anti-social, aggressive, intimidating cars. The more people I offend with them the better. The way I see it, all these sheep who "own" (and I use the term loosely) new anony-box cars will never understand us old car drivers, or as NickB puts it so well, are too scared to be different. I won't ever try to convince them otherwise - it's a waste of time. I focus my energies on making them feel uncomfortable by parking nice and cosy-like up against them in the car park, or just generally getting up their noses. A favourite one of mine at present is whacking the choke on full on the Mazda - it smokes like a b@stard!

could it not be down to pure jelousy? there all driving round in the same boring paxos, corsas even focuses, and because they don't have the patience, dedication, and basic skills needed to run an old(er) motor that can sometimes be difficult (or near impossible if you are called dave!) to locate parts for, or even because they think a cd player wont work in it ! i think there is a misconception about fuel economy of older cars too, so that would put people off, but i cant really think of anything other, although i have noticed i never seem to get pulled over in newer cars - conspiracy theory time! hmm..... i needs a mini......

I find that people don't have a problem with my driving an old car but they do have a problem with me driving an Imp "Imps are a stupid choice of car that will always break down and look stupid". I get so much grief for being an Imp fan its getting beyond a joke.

a good point there.
When did the words " old " and " curse word " become linked.
When i get asked what car i drive, and i reply " a 1983 VW Golf " eyebrows drop and the subject gets changed.....

Because consumerism being what it is, unless you have a new car you are obviously poor or stupid ... Bang on. People lack the imagination to work it out. Depriciation, rude dealers, poorly made cars, expensive warranty claims and no involvement in the cars they own and drive. I had an arguement with a jumped up little upstart banging on about how enviromentally damaging my Ratsun is. I know all about it, the fuel reserves are in a dangerously low position but the car has been on the roads for 24 years, thus being the ultimate in recycled cars. It sips unleaded and due to its age and general crankiness, I rarely drive it agressively..... ...and now the government are going to try to fleece us per mile......

I have only ever driven old cars,And i mean seriously Old!. I posted here before a pic of the car i restored while still at school,a 1934 morris 8 which was like a prehistoric beast even back then,i've driven Model A fords,30's V8s ,and my daily driver is a '74 merc. But being a merc and the general public being a bit reverse snobbish,it's a "prestige car" in their eyes so it's OK. ;D ;D Here in Queensland it's only politicians and greenies who don't like old cars(oh,and car dealers !!) but trendoid "alternative types" often ask if the merc i happen to be driving at the time is for sale, because to drive something like a 60's merc is gives them some sort of credibility. For that reason old volvos(240 etc ) and peugeots like 404's are expensive because these university types want/ need to buy some "cool".

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

drive. I had an arguement with a jumped up little upstart banging on about how enviromentally damaging my Ratsun is. ive had this argument about my 411. i shut them up by pointing out that it has been professionally set up on a dyno for power.the by- product of this is a nice efficient engine. efficiecy=less polutants coming out. my car is more environmentally friendly then your 3 year old vectra so p*ss off.and by the way, will it be around in 36 years?
