Browsing the web last night looking for tips on improving my matter splatering technique I stumbled on this rather handy little site. www.mig-welding.co.uk/Ideal for the hamfisted amateur like myself and they have a forum too. Its not been up long but it looks like it could grow into quite a good site.

there is a welding section in a classic car mag i was flicking thru in newsagents other day looking for something interesting, but only bit that i thought would be good advice to a novice is: use some scrap to practice on before going near the car! set welder to about 80 amps for body and ajust wire feed until it makes a sound like frying bacon, that made me hungry so i went and got a bacon and egg butty.
My welding tips: wear goggles (yes as well as using mask as it can help prevent flash) a good pair of leather gauntlets, boiler suit, baseball cap (worn backwards stops sparks going down the back of ur neck) and a leather apron if you have one, as sparks will burn/shock you. it is also a good idea to have a buddy with you, in case you set something/ urself on fire and do not realise
clean both surfaces to be welded with a grinder as paint stinks when burned and can affect quality of weld also remove any interior trim carpets etc closer than 2 feet(minimum personal reccomendation increase for peace of mind) from where you will be working
while welding, don't get carried away and do it all in one go as this can warp the metal, spot round it every few inches then alternating to opposite ends do 1 inch stiches.
then is easy to grind back slightly with grinder/ linisher and clean up ready for primer
the article in the mag also covered arc and tig welding.
